Lirr (LEER) is the Power of literacy, artistry, and the written word. She is represented as a tall women with light hair and hazel eyes. She always wears a blue robe with yellow trim and a red cloak. When armed, her weapon of choice is most usually a rapier. It is said that she carries a great book of poetry that, when read, grants enlightenment, understanding, and a greater appreciation for works of art. She opposes those who that would destroy art and knowledge or try to hide it.
The written word, be it in rhyme, prose, myth, or logbook, is the linchpin of civilization. Preserve written works so that the knowledge of the past can be given to the future, and to put oral records in more permanent form. Art should be revered, for it conveys feelings and messages that would take hundreds of pages to explain. Every poem, book, or painting lost is a piece of history forgotten.
Lirr is most largely revered by artists and intellectuals. Many clerics have skill as bards, telling tales and painting pictures rather than singing. These followers differ from those of say Delleb and Boccob, in that they strive to educate those less fortunate than themselves rather than indulge in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake (or more selfish reasons). Services to the Power are always spoken in poetic verse.
Temples of Lirr are like schools, with the clerics acting as teachers. Teaching is usually limited to simple skills of reading and writing higher education is left to others (such as clerics of Delleb). Adventuring clerics are usually most interested in the recovery of ancient scrolls and texts (they will often cooperate with clerics of Delleb in these endeavors). They wander Wearth in search of lore, news, poetry, historical tales, magic, and works of art. They sneak into lands ruled by oppressive leaders (such as Iuz), trying to rescue items of interest that are at risk of being destroyed out of malice or ignorance. Clerics who have retired from adventuring careers take up teaching full-time and also work in the manufacturing of books. They will bind, sew, tan the leather and make the paper, themselves. Novice clerics spend months making copies of their temple's archives of books, scrolls, and works of art, which are distributed so that others may enjoy them. Rank within the church is denoted by the color their robes - yellow, red, and blue, in ascending order of authority.
