The Winedark Sea
The Winedark Sea reaches it's northern most point at the entrance to the Valley of the Ancients. It is the name given to the sea that separates the eastern continent from the lands of the CSIO and Barbarian Atlantis. It reaches all the way to Ghinor to the South. This warm water sea provides great fishing and fairly smooth sailing. It's deep blue color give the Winedark Sea its name. The state of sail-craft on Wearth is such that not many ships are capable of crossing such great expanses of ocean. Most ships are coast running rowed ships that travel along the coast lines and between island ports. Piracy is a constant problem on the Winedark Sea. The City State of Tarantis was, until as recently as 50 years ago, controlled almost entirely by pirates. There is a lot of friction between the merchant fleets of the City State of the Invincible Overlord, Tarantis and the Kingdom of Karak. Even the occasional dragon boat full of raiders from Valon make there way into the Winedark Sea. Add into this honest pirates and whatever sea monsters decide to pop up, and you have dangerous conditions for sea travel.
Most of the coastlines along the Winedark Sea are rocky, jagged places with natural harbors few and far between. This is a good indication that the level of the Winedark was much higher in the past than it is now. In lots of places the rocky shoreline can be dozens of feet above the level of the sea. There are not many places you can safely land a ship bigger than a small skiff. In the area of the Valley of the Ancients, with the exception of Greenswabs, there are no harbors that accommodate deep water ships.
