The currency system has been around since the reign of King Gabriel. Though his time
as king was short, he still made several changes. When he took the throne, there was a basic
system used with gold coins. The alloy was not hard to find underwater or anywhere else and
gold farmers were unique in finding gold, almost as if they had a sixth sense. Nevertheless,
one gold coin was worth a lot, which most of the poor population could not afford. Thus,
King Gabriel saw this as a problem. Poor subjects could not care for themselves properly,
which would create the problem of famine that could then lead to disease. Some time later, that
is exactly what happened. Children were dying far before their time because the unfortunate
could not care properly for their families. A new type of currency had to be fashioned, but
King Gabriel did not know where to start.
King Gabriel consulted his council of the matter and none were concerned for the welfare of the
less fortunate. This angered and hurt King Gabriel as he expected better from his partners.
However, their attitudes did not stop him. The king took it upon himself to commission several
gold farmers to find other alloys, seek other gems, pearls and jewels, anything they thought
could be used as a more defined currency system so the poor could be included in the economy.
Before long, each farmer had come back with something new and different. Several had even
ventured beyond the boundaries of water to the surface world. The items returned were copper,
silver, ruby, platinum and bronze. King Gabriel proclaimed these items perfect to solve their
problems. Each alloy would be fashioned into a coin then given it's own value. The money would
circulate amongst the people more effeciently. The values were set according to the chart
below. The name of the system, however, is still a mystery to be solved.
The Aqua Ruby (100) is of the highest value and most of the rich carry these precious gems. However, because their weight adds up quickly, the coins are feasible to carry in a purse or pouch. The stones were brought in large quantities and then cut down to one inch length and half that in diameter, which would be measured in the center.
Many have often wondered why Silver (50) has a higher value than gold. The answer to that is simple: silver was and still is rarer than gold. Gold is abundant, but silver is not and it takes a great deal of hands with pitchforks to find silver. Only one third of the kingdoms silver was placed into the currency flow and it is estimated that only a handfull of the rich population get one silver coin. The coin has become a collectors choice amongst the people.
As anyone could guess The Gold Coin (20) has lost some of its value due to the Aqua Ruby and Silver coin. Yet, it still circulates more than any other coin, aside from the copper. Even the poor peasants get gold coins at times, especially if an employer decides to pay in multiples of twenty. More than 65% of the kingdoms gold circulates to help balance the flow.
The Platinum (10) coin is a bit darker than the silver, but just so people aren't confused and to keep con artists from tricking victims, a triangle was engraved then blackened into the coin to differenciate between the two. Because each coin is the same size, different colors is what enables one to tell them apart. This case just happened to be slightly different. Seems King Gabriel thought of everything.
The Bronze (5) and Copper (1) coins are of nothing special or unique. Their values just make payments easier concerning small or prime numbers. The Bronze was given it's value later as the council decided that a value of five was not needed, but they later discovered, due to massive complaints that the coin would be necessary. The copper coin is disliked to be used for payment, but it is used the most. People can't even pay their taxes with these coins.
