Hink was orphaned as a young child, and no one ever really spoke of his real parents. He was raised by Vrail, a wise old hermit who lived at the edge of town. Whenever he asked about his parents, the subject was quickly changed, and Hink soon learned that it was probably best not to ask. He was a well-liked young child who always got along with the other youngsters, and usually seemed to be the ringleader during mischievous childhood goings-on. As a child, he often found himself at Yulleko’s house, as Vrail and the island’s leader were old friends. This lead to him forming a special bond with Yulleko’s son Tuppin. The two were inseparable throughout their preteen years.

As Hink approached adolescence, though, he noticed strange changes and “feelings” deep within him. If he concentrated, he found that he could manifest these “feelings” in strange, sometimes powerful ways. This seriously freaked him out. All he really wanted to do was be “just another one of the boys”, but he now felt odd; different. He withdrew himself more and more from the rest of “the boys”, Tuppin included. Vrail and Yulleko noticed this, and seemed to have some understanding of the powers that Hink possessed.

Upon his 15th birthday, the two elders sat him down and tried to explain to Hink that he was in possession of a great gift, which could be used for the betterment of life on Flen. They told him that he could be a great leader of men someday, even greater than Yulleko himself, if he cultivated and used his powers wisely. They also cautioned him to use caution in exercising his powers, especially around others, whom he could easily harm. Hink left this meeting feeling as if the weight of the world had been placed upon his young shoulders. All he wanted to do was be like the others, he loved his life on Flen, and wanted no more than a quiet life on his beloved island.

He had recently befriended the owner of the Drowning Pebble and had taken an interest in cooking. The biggest ambition in his young mind was to someday become the head cook at the Drowning Pebble. All this new power and responsibility was more than he could deal with. He withdrew from the rest of the kids his age, and spent most of his free time wandering the woods and environs of Flen, contemplating life and trying to come to terms with the power inside him. He began keeping a journal, in order to try to make some sense out of the tumult inside his head. Vrail and Yulleko recognized his reluctance, and backed off slightly, though they continually reminded him of his “place in the great order of the universe” and whatnot. Yulleko seemed to constantly go out of his way to talk to him and give him “free advice”. It almost seemed at times that he was grooming Hink to be his successor, instead of his son, Tuppin. This greatly worried Hink, as he feared his longtime friend would turn against him in jealousy. Hink explained this to Yulleko, who took it into consideration, but nevertheless continued his gentle, constant “pressure”. To his credit, Tuppin never really seemed to mind his father’s constant doting on Hink. Tuppin seemed pretty certain that, when the appointed time came, he would take over as the Townsfather. It was not really an obsession with him; he simply felt destined and duty-bound to fulfill the role.

After a couple of years, Hink began to come to terms with his powers and his place in the world (at least the world of Flen). He began associating more closely with his peers, even performing little “tricks” from time to time (No, not THOSE kinds of tricks...). He grew to be quite popular, a real “life of the party”. He began working at the Drowning Pebble, and threw himself into the study of the culinary arts. This provided a great respite from the thoughts of “power” and “responsibility”. When his mind was not bent on gastronomy, he often wandered the wilds of Flen, trying to “figure out” his powers and his place in the world.

At the time of the campaign’s start, Hink had found some sort of peace with the world. Yulleko slowly came to realize that Hink had no political designs, eventually turning his attentions more closely to his own son, Tuppin. Tuppin, it seemed, had at least some aspirations toward leadership (much to Hink’s relief). Tuppin and Hink remained good friends. He was widely regarded as a “wizard” when in the kitchen at the Drowning Pebble, even without tapping into his arcane gift. Hink had by this time explored nearly every nook and cranny of his beloved Flen Island and filled journal upon journal with notes, maps and observations. He had even made friends with some of the Mank, though he kept this fact mostly to himself. He hoped someday to edit and compile these notes into a sort of “Flen Guidebook”, so that he could share his beloved island with the rest of the world (such as he imagined it to be).

Tuppin’s sickness and eventual coma hit Hink especially hard, due to his close friendship with the heir apparent. He was extremely frustrated that his mysterious powers could not seem to help his friend in any way. When offered a chance (no matter how much of a longshot) to help his friend, he jumped at the chance.

Now, far from home and separated from his old friend, he finds himself in a strange land with a hefty price on his head. It has occurred to him that his strange powers may be the only thing that will get him and his allies out of the mess that they’re in. He is, like his companions, filled with wonder and awe at the nature of his new surroundings, but he can’t quite shake his feelings of homesickness. Though initially convinced that Tuppin was safe and in good hands, he has begun to have doubts as of late, due in part to a series of troubling dreams.
