Unit type: attack-use tank The Magella Attack Tank is one of the many unique Zeon machines that was brought down along with the Zaku in the opening stages of the war. Its unusual hull structure is only the first of many radical changes it has over the conventional tank. Its turret can actually detach from the main body and achieve flight for short periods of time, and it only requires a single crewman to operate. The Magella Attack's single 175mm cannon is an extremely powerful APFSDS type (armor-piercing, fin-stabilized discarding sabot) type, and it can even penetrate the Federation's vaunted lunar titanium armor if it hits a flat surface from head-on. Its 35mm machinegun pod is intended for use against infantry, and it also equips a set of grenade launchers around the cockpit, usually armed as smoke dischargers. Like many quirky Zeon designs, the Magella Attack has its flaws. Its turret can only fly for a few minutes at a time, and its cannon is wildly inaccurate while airborne. As such, it is mostly intended for a pilot escape means, or to quickly gather reconnaissance over a terrain obstacle. A better machine for use against mobile suits than the Type 61, but it is utterly dwarfed by the massive Admiral A-1 supertank. |
Unit type: atmospheric fighter The Dopp is much like the Magella Attack Tank in the sense that it is an oddball unit with high performance. The Dopp bears only a passing resemblance to traditional aircraft design with its raised cockpit and stubby body. This low-resistance design makes it extremely fast and nimble in combat; they are nearly impossible to shoot down by ground weaponry. Its cockpit offers exceptional visability, and it is not uncommon to see Dopps being used as forward observation units for calling in long-range attacks. The Dopp's weapons are mounted inside a pair of pods on each side of the cockpit. It uses a wire-guidance system to bring its quick-tracking missiles on target, and also arms a set of 20mm guns for strafing ground targets or attacking enemy aircraft at close range. The Dopp's chief weakness is its extremely high fuel consumption. Unlike most Federal aircraft, the Dopp's loiter time is ridiculously low. It is best used in combat scenarios where it can operate out of a Gaw assault carrier or a local airbase, as Dopps need to replenish their fuel tanks often to stay at full combat ability. |
Dodai YS Initially developed as a bomber aircraft, the Dodai YS quickly became famous for its ridiculous thrust-to-lift ratio. This allows it to carry a mobile suit on its back and ferry it into combat, also providing it with a massive boost to mobility and attack power. Dodai YS patrols, each with a Gouf on their back, are common scenes in Zeon-occupied Eastern Europe and Asia.
Dodai II Something of an offshoot from the Dodai YS, the Dodai II isn't hardly a bomber at all. Rather, it takes the Dodai YS's unusual job and turns it into a full-time profession; its sole purpose is to transport mobile suits and provide them with a highly mobile platform to stage their attacks. The Dodai II has no real weaponry that would pose a threat to enemy units, but it is almost as fast and maneuverable as a Dopp despite its bulky size and appearance. |
