PC Engine Review: Ane San
Publisher: NEC Avenue
Genre: Adventure
Game Type: PCE Super CD

Did you ever play the living hell out of Streets of Rage? I did! And the VERY first thing that I thought of when I played this game was Streets of Rage: Girl Fight!

Ane San is an excellent side scrolling beat-em up game. It slides easily into the same category as Dougle Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Fighting Street. There are two major differences though.

First, Ane San has all girl characters, from the three main characters to the girl with the Hannibal Lector facemask. Next, Instead of getting multiple lives, you only get one life. However, you get to use each available character once before the game ends, so you really do get three lives still. I thought this was a rather unique concept.

As for gameplay, Ane San does fairly well. The buttons are simple, fight and jump. Combining the buttons performs several different special moves. Simplistic, but it works. The game is fairly steady, but not fast, and the enemies are not very skilled. But don't think there isn't a challenge, because your life bar is fairly low, forcing you to fight skillfully and avoid taking hits.

As an added bonus, there seems to be a two player mode to the game. However, I didn't play it and see what it was like, as I was the only one home when I was playing. It's a nice touch to add bonus modes to a game like this, and it wasn't that common back in 1995 when this game was produced.

Overall, Ane San is fun, but not deep. Of course if you can read Japanese, it might be more involving, as the characters are talking all the time, even during battle. Either way, it's an enjoyable title, and rather rare, so it's worth picking it up!
