Overview: The success of the Incubus light Battlemech made Wolf Pack technicians consider building a larger, heavier version of the mech. Utilizing a more reinforced but virtually identical chassis and body-form as the Incubus (known as the Vixen to Inner Sphere pilots), WP created a mech that weighed nearly three times more than the Incubus, but maintained its svelte profile, and so, successfully confused Inner Sphere tactical IFF (Identification: Friend-Or-Foe) computers, as well as rival Clan's computers. When a pilot thought he was up against a light mech that could be easily taken down, they found themselves up against a more dangerous, more deadly foe.
Capabilities: Armed with one of the deadliest Clan weapons, as well as a newly developed one, the Ronin is not to be taken lightly. The Gauss Rifle that encases the left hand can pound an opponent's armour into ferro-ceramic bits, while the Heavy Large Laser in the right arm's rifle-pod burns a hole through the rest. And when the Ronin gets close up, a pair of SRM-6 Streaks are ready to supplement the Gauss Rifle's unfortunate minimum range.
--On the note of the Heavy Large Laser, it should be noted that the WP technicians managed to overcome the deficiencies in the accelerator shields (which, when the weapon was fired were insufficient to block the energy backwash that temporarily fries 'Mechs targetting systems) by increasing the barrel's length, and adding strength to the shields. Unfortunately, the weapon still maintains its +1 modifier, as the weapon is heavier than it should be and is harder to target with. (for game purposes, the weight didn't change significantly, and neither did the modifier.)
--And for added defense, an AMS was installed in the head, for maximum yield cone of fire. The addition of Jumpjets were simply ot give the mech mobility it's predecessor did not have.
Battle History: The Ronin is a new mech, and has only seen action when attacks by Inner Sphere raiders occured on Wolf Pack-garrisonned worlds. Many a warrior paid dearly for the mistake in identification when encountering it.
Variants: The only variant known at this time is only a variant in armour. The Ronin can also support Ferro-Fibrous armour, giving it nearly three tons more space than the standard has. What weapon or weapons are installed in that space is apparentally left completely up to the pilot.
--Update: Recent reports indicate the Ronin seen on the battlefield was but a prototype for a new Omnimech version. Both bear the same chassis design, but the TRUE Ronin has much different physical features. The AMS that was seen as central in the head of the 'prototype' has been shifted to the 'Mech's left temple; a twin-cannon AMS turret, where a simple radio-band antennae had been. The communcations gear is now stored in the back of the head, in a small spire.
--A rumoured Beta configuration for the Ronin has it bearing a variety of LRM launchers spread over its torso and shoulders, and a snub-nosed set of lasers where the Heavy Large Laser should be. It should be noted that this is a rumoured variant, and its true armament and strength is a subject of much debate in the Clans, as well as the IS. More information as warranted.
---Emergency Update: Two more OmniMech designs for the Ronin have been fielded within Wolf Clan borders; they have been tenatively dubbed as ALPHA and BETA, though pilots call them the "Missile Boat" and "Heavy-Arms" modes.
Sidenote about these new designs: ALPHA appears to carry a Medium Heavy Laser that is distinctly unusual. Instead of a shapeless, bland piece of hardware like the rest of the Mech's more common-place design, the MHL appears to almost have been GROWN. No one can conjecture what it is truly made of, as this unit has yet to be captured and back-engineered. An intercepted message between Wolf Pack ships has indicated ominously that the WP is currently engaged with a mysterious new enemy, and that their invasion of former IS/Clan-space is merely a byproduct of an ongoing battle. Just what is going on in the Periphery?
---Addendum: FIVE fully designed Ronin types have been encountered on a Rimworld called Rift, each one seemingly designed for specific purposes. In addition to the "Buckshot", "Heavy-Arms" and the "Inverse Archer", a frightening monster of a Mech was seen tearing apart a Dropship's doors, having dismembered the mechs protecting the ship, and evading the ship's big-guns. This seemingly mutant variation of the Ronin incorporates a weapon previously unused weapon by the Clans; the HATCHET. It seems this "X-1 Ronin MUTATION" is designed to be a morale-killer/Berzerker unit. It is rumoured that it is only given to warriors who would willingly throw their lives away for the sake of honour, but as yet, only one has been seen. It may be just an abberation... certain components of its design barely seem human, but it is not surprising, as the Alpha configuration carries a Medium Heavy Laser that more closely resembles a living thing than a piece of hardware.
Just what is it the Wolf Pack has been doing??....And what of their talk of 'another enemy'?.... Mysteries abound.
