In the beginning of the First Age in Middle Earth, Finwë was chosen by Oromë, the Valar to be one of three elven Kings sent to Valinor. Once these Kings saw the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, they compelled their peoples to make the journey West. "Then befell the first sundering of the Elves. For the kindred of Ingwë, and the most part of the kindreds of Finwë and Elwë, were swayed by the words of their lords, and were willing to depart and follow Oromë; and these were known even after as the Eldar, by the name that Oromë gave to the Elves in the beginning, in their own tongue. "These were the three kindreds (Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri) of the Eldalië, who passing at length into the uttermost West in the days of the Trees are called the Calaquendi, Elves of the Light."
Finwë was the father of Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin. He ruled the Noldor from Aman in Valinor. Finwë was slain by Morgoth at Formenos, when the Silmarils were stolen. His decendents are the main focus of The Silmarillion. Tolkien, describes,"...the Noldor, a name of wisdom, the people of Finwë. They are the Deep Elves, the friends of Aulë; and they are renowned in song, for they fought and laboured long and grievously in the northern lands of old."
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion p. 52.
"Great became their knowledge and their skill; yet even greater was their thirst for more knowledge, and in many things they soon surpassed their teachers. They were changeful in speech, for they had great love of words, and sought ever to find names more fit for all things that they knew or imagined. And it came to pass that the masons of the house of Finwë, quarrying in the hills after stone (for they delighted in the building of high towers), first discovered the earth-gems, and brought them forth in countless myriads; and they devised tools for the cutting and shaping of gems, and carved them in many forms. They hoarded them not, but gave them freely, and by their labour enriched all Valinor."
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion p. 60.
