Weyr Maps

This page contains lots of images, not all of which are "maps", but rather guides for the imagination...

The Weyr Bowl

Many things within the graphic are merely for representation, not for actual number. For example, there are many more ground weyrs than actually shown. Also, the pavillions and oil sheds are also just to give writers an idea of where they are. The number and location is up to the discretion of every writer.

The Lower Caverns

The Lower Caverns is actually many floors, but the most important facilities all being located on the first floor. The staircases and hallways that connect most of the Weyr are dark and dreary, despite the glows. Most people try to hitch rides via dragons wherever they need to go, but do take the halls when necessary. All the black-colored stairwells lead to the second floor, that contains mostly living quarters, with a few additional meeting rooms and such. There is also a Guest Room Facility that has no connecting halls except the stairway leading down. This is good for 'guests' of the Weyr who need to have a 'guard' or a 'watcher' placed at the bottom of the stairwell. General guests can use these facilities, but more integrated rooms are also available. The gray stairwell leads down to the Tunnels (where brats try to catch tunnelsnakes, hide-and-go-seek, etc), the Cold Stores for perishables that cannot stand the Igen heat, and more.

A draongrider's weyr

An example of a dragonrider's weyr, though variation exists according to rank, dragon color, and simply the placement within the Weyr Bowl itself. Since Igen was naturally formed, many of the weyrs vary due to that in size shape and arrangement. The larger weyrs tend to go to larger dragons, or those of higher rank, the most valued being those above the Weyrlake. The highly coveted weyrs may have many rooms, such as those for families. Of course the size of the dragon couch and the weyrledge varies too - a gold is going to need a lot more room than a green! The furnishings are basic within every weyr, though those of rank tend to get a little more. Riders can choose their own furnishings, and add to their rooms out of their own mark bags. Some weyrs may have bathing chambers while others may not, though there is always one linked via the tunnel halls if nothing else.

A weyr has little furniture. Beyond the dragon's stone couch and its weyrmate's bed, there may be a garment chest. There are closets in a few of the principal chambers, such as those of the Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen, but as the power tools began to wear out, closets ceased to be a priority construction items. A rider will have rugs and tapestries to keep out the cold of the stone, and perhaps a small table and chair, especially if he practices a handicraft, but generally dragonriders do not keep many personal possessions.

The Candidate Barracks

The Barracks are in a roughly circular arrangement, with the middle containing the bathing facilities separated into male and female. Three general halls lead to the Barracks and are indicated on the map. The Candidate Barracks are labeled in the Pernese alphabet (though I used English) in order to avoid confusion with the weyrling werys which are labeled in numerics.

A General Candidate Barrack, though some variation exists. Please see the Candidate Barracks's Page for details. Each one is narrow and is sparsely furnished for up to four people. But everything the Candidates need is provided.

The Weyrling Barracks

The Weyrling Barracks are arranged so that the larger dragons are closer to the entrance and in the wider hallways. Each room is color-coded by a curtain, indicating the color of the dragon that is housed within. While the barracks can hold nearly 100 dragonets, most of the time, that many are not needed, and weyrlings are housed grouped closest to the entrance.

A General Weyrling Barrack, though some variation exists. Please see the Weyrling Page for details. This is different from the weyrs that each weyrling receives. They are more like the General weyrs that are diagrammed on this page as well.
