First a couple tips on how to get yourself some plat:

• You can farm fine steel weapons from many areas, starting in Unrest in the upper levels and the basement, also areas like Lower Gukta are prime ares for farming fine steel, which will sell for several plat each, or can be used to get you a head start on your smithing skills.
• Okay, more specifics now. Rangers, save everything you forage, you can make good money selling it in the bazaar on a trader. If you have a decent buff, like Spirit of Wolf, or Temperance, offer to cast it for donations in the Plane of Knowledge.
• Learn a tradeskill. This is a real money drain to begin with, but you can make money selling your better stuff to other players or make money just by doing combines in your specific tradeskill for people.
