Final Fantasy VI

Sabin pulling off a Suplex on the Doom Train. Who woulda thought a single man could jump into the air with a train AND turn it upside down?

Ok, so Final Fantasy VI by far had the best graphics of all the SNES Final Fantasy games. It also had one of the best soundtracks. The music from this game was great. FFVI also had a great storyline, and the gameplay is hard to outdo. The characters of FFVI are also entirely unforgettable. Their dynamic personalities make for a very interesting game.

As for the storyline, it begins something like this. You start as a woman named Terra, who was born with the gift of magic. This gift was highly unusual, and very much sought after by those in power at the time. Terra was captured by the evil Empire, and forced by means of a slave crown to fight for them using their powerful MagiTek armor. This armor was infused with magic that was sucked out of the mystical beings known as Espers. At the beginning of the game, Terra, who is accompanied by Vicks(or Biggs in some translations ), and Wedge, two Imperial Soldiers sent to give Terra her orders, are heading to Narshe in search of a frozen Esper that the villagers discovered while mining. The villagers dont like the idea of the soldiers invading their town however, so they fight back. They send their fighters, and even some wolves and wooly-mammoth(I hope I spelled that right) type creatures. Nothing they send of course can stand up to the MagiTek armor, so the entire force is crushed. So, after making it to the room the Esper is in, and after a boss battle, you finally make it to the Esper, Tritoch, and of course, he's stuck in a big crystal of ice. After Terra sees the Esper, she begins reacting strangely to it, and the Esper begins glowing with an odd blue light. The soldiers, entirely dumbfounded, suddenly vanish, destroyed by the Esper. Afterwards, the scene switches to a house in Narshe, where Terra is resting in a bed, saved by a member of an underground resistance movement. Arvis, the man who saved her, calls for Locke, who in my opinion is one of the coolest characters every created. The only problem is, before Locke can get to Arvis' house, the Narshe soldiers come after Terra, not understanding that she was under the control of a slave crown of the Empire. So, Terra is forced to run through a back door, and make her way through the mines of Narshe while being chased by soldiers. Finally, she is cornered, and falls down a hole in the floor, knocking her unconscious. About this time, Locke shows up. He then races to find Terra, and leaps down the hole just in time to see the guards coming for her. Luckily for him however, the Moogles show up, and with their ever famous "Kupo!", offer their services in defeating the guards. So, a long drawn battle ensues between your parties of Locke and the Moogles. After defeating the leader of the guards, Locke and Terra escape through the mines to the outskirts of Narshe, and from here their adventure begins.

And now, for yet another character listing.

Terra - Terra is your main magic user at the beginning of the game, as she is the only person who can cast spells. Good reason huh? Anyway, Terra is an awesome fighter, because not only is she a mage, but she can also use the heavy weapons and armor, so has good defense and good physical attack power. She also learns spells apart from using Magicite, which is the only way for most of the other characters to learn magic. Eventually Terra learns the special ability Morph. This lets her transform into an Esper state that boosts all of her stats greatly. Terra's ultimate weapon is Illumina, a Pearl(Holy) Elemental sword that randomly casts Pearl on your enemy.

Locke - Locke is just plain awesome no matter how you look at it. At the beginning of the game, he cant fight very well, and has kind of low defense, but his speed and ability to steal from enemies makes up for those defects. Later in the game however, Locke can be turned into the best fighter in the game. Due to his natural speed, and the ability to use Magicite to boost his speed even more at level up, he can be made to attack once every 2 seconds or so. When you equip Locke with the Genji Glove and Offering relics, along with the Atma Weapon and Valiant Knife, you can have Locke do 9999HP 8 times per turn every 2 seconds or so. You can do the math to figure out how fast most enemies die from this assault. Locke of course is also the thief of the game, so you can have him steal many items from the enemies, then kill them in a very short amount of time. Locke's ultimate weapon would have to be either the Valiant Knife or Atma Weapon, and a combination of these two is unbelievably powerful.

Edgar - Edgar is the king of Figaro, and a master engineer. His main weapons are spears, but he can also fight well with swords, and wears all of the heavy armors of the game. Edgar's special ability is the Tools command. The tools can be bought(or found in the case of the Chainsaw and Air Anchor), and then used in battle for different effects. The Auto-Crossbow shoots a string of arrows at all enemies on the screen, causing a fair bit of damage. The Bio Blaster sprays poison gas and poisons all enemies. The Noise Blaster confuses all enemies on the screen. The Drill attacks one enemy for massive damage. The Debilitator changes the elemental weakness of an enemy. Flash uses a camera to cause a blinding flash that damages all enemies. The Chainsaw does two attacks, one causes massive damage, the other is an auto-kill attack. Then finally, the Air Anchor. The Air Anchor instantly kills enemies as soon as they try to attack. Edgar's ultimate weapon is the Aura Lance.

Sabin - Sabin is Edgar's brother. Sabin is a martial artist, so he fights with his hands by equipping claws, and cant wear heavy armors. He is also one of the strongest physical attackers of the game. His special ability is Blitz. Sabin learns blitzes depending on his level. The ones he starts out with are Pummel, Aura Beam, and Suplex. Pummel causes him to bash an enemy constantly with his fists. Aura Beam causes him to shoot a beam of energy at his enemy. Suplex causes him to grab an opponent and jump into the air off-screen, then slam it into the ground head first. Later, he learns others. Fire Dance is a fire-elemental attack that hits all enemies. Chakra is a restorative ability. Air Blade is a wind elemental attack that damages all enemies. Then there's Bum Rush, his strongest attack. It's basically an upgraded Pummel, in which he circles around the enemy beating them senseless. Sabin's ultimate weapon is the Tiger Claw.

Shadow - Shadow is the Ninja of the game. Unfortunately, he doesnt use two weapons unless you equip the Genji Glove on him, but this is always a good thing to do. He also has the Throw ability, which lets him throw weapons and items for different degrees of attack power. Some items also let him become invisible to enemies. Shadow is an amazing fighter, with dexterity almost as high as Locke's, and better fighting capabilities at the beginning of the game than Locke has. Shadow's ultimate weapon is the Stunner, which can cause paralysis to your enemies.

Cyan - Cyan is a samurai, which of course means he is a great fighter. He looks and talks a lot like a midieval knight unfortunately, but this really doesnt take away from him as a character. He uses samurai swords as his weapons, and is your strongest physical fighter for the most part. His special ability is Sword Techs. Dispatch causes him to leap and slash an enemy. Retort causes him to counter attack for major damage when he gets hit. Slash is used to cut an enemy's HP in half. Quadra Slam causes him to attack 4 times on random enemies. Empowerer is kind of like Dragon Sword, draining HP and MP from an enemy. Quadra Slice is a much more powerful version of Quadra Slam. Cleave is an instant kill attack, it causes him to leap off the screen and slice all the enemies, cleaving them in half. Cyan's ultimate weapon is the Sky Render.

Celes - Celes and Terra are very similar. The biggest difference is that Celes' magic powers came from being infused with energy from the Espers, while Terra was born with it. Celes uses the same weapons and armor as Terra, and has about the same amount of magic power, but definitely has a much better personality. She also has a special ability that lets her absorb magic attacks that and turn them into MP. Her ultimate weapon is Illumina.

Gau - Gau is a very complicated character. Not only does he not speak english very well, but you have little to no control over what attacks he uses. On the brighter side though. he has over a hundred different abilities he can learn. Unfortunately, he doesnt have a Fight command, instead his fight command is changed to Rage. What Rage does is this: When on the Veldt, Gau can Leap into the midst of your enemies and vanish for a while. When he comes back, he'll have learned the enemie's attacks. The names of the enemies can later be selected from the list of Rages and used. Once you select which enemy you want Gau to imitate, he goes into action, and doesnt stop until the battle ends. This poses a problem, since you cant control him at all while he is using Rage. Gau can't equip weapons, so therefore, of course, has no ultimate weapon.

Setzer - Setzer is a gambler, and the owner of the only airship in the world. This of course means that you have to aquire the airship from him at some point in the game. The cool thing though, is that along with the ship you also gain the use of Setzer. He's a decent fighter, and can wear a lot of good armor. His main weapons are actually darts, and dice of all things. His ultimate weapon are none other than loaded dice. They do pretty random damage, but it's usually a fairly high amount. His special ability is Slots. He spins a slot machine, and depending on what the slot machine lands on is what kind of attack it does. Every now and then it'll heal you by using some odd little rabbit. It also can summon the airship to drop bombs on your enemies, or send a bunch of glowing cards flying up into the enemies.

Mog - What person hasn't wanded to have a Moogle on their team? And what a fighter he is...Mog's main weapon is the spear, just like Edgar. He can use other weapons also, but usually sticks to the spear. Mog's special ability is Dance. He learns these dances depending on what terrain he's standing in at the time of the battle. There's a dance for field, forest, desert, water, cavern, and snow. Each one uses the element of it's surrounding, and actually changes the battle scenery accordingly. The biggest problem with Mog's dancing is that like Gau's Rage, once Mog starts, he doesnt stop until the battle ends. The good thing is, most of his dances are very powerful, some causing instant death, and a few of them heal you pretty well. Mog's ultimate armor is something called the Snow Muffler. This armor is amazing, it ups his defense rating to the maximum, causing all physical attacks to do only 1 HP of damage to him. This comes in handy a lot when fighting Brachiosaurs. Mog's ultimate weapon is also the Aura lance.

Strago - Strago is a Blue Mage. His main magic power comes from learning special attacks from enemies. The way he learns these attacks, called Lores, is to have the enemy cast it on him, which makes gaining all the Lores a rather long and tedious process. Strago mostly uses staffs and rods to attack, and can have pretty good physical attacks if you give him strong enough rods. His magic power ends up being some of the strongest in the game though, so dont neglect him entirely. His Lores also come in handy, especially once you learn Big Guard. As far as I can remember, Strago's ultimate weapon is the Magus rod.

Relm - Relm is Strago's grandaughter. She's pretty worthless as a character for the most part. The best ability she has is Sketch, which causes her to make a sketch of an enemy, which attacks using one of the enemies special attacks. Later on you get an item that turns Sketch into Control. Once you get Control, Relm actually becomes useful, because youn can take control of an enemy and have it attack all the other enemies on the screen. About the best thing to do with Relm though is to gather all the Imp equipment, then equip it on her and cast the Imp spell on her. The Imp equipment consists of the Imp Halberd, Titanium Helmet, Turtle Shield, and Imp Armor. The equipment is entirely weak and worthless when you put it on, but as soon as you cast Imp on the wearer, the equipment becomes quite powerful, and raises attack and defense well beyond what most weapons and armor can handle. I cant really remember what Realm's ultimate weapon is, but I believe it's called the Rainbow Brush.

Gogo - Gogo is a mime. He is also a hidden character, located on Triangle Island. The only way to find him is to have your entire party swallowed by a Zone Eater. No one knows quite for sure whether Gogo is a male or female actually, but it's been speculated that Gogo is actually a female friend of Setzer's, which to me makes perfect sense when you take a lot of the evidence into consideration. Either way, I'm going to just refer to Gogo as a He for now, until it's proven otherwise. So anyway, Gogo of course can use the Mime ability. This lets him mimic the action of whatever character had it's turn before him. You can also set different abilities on him, such as the Fight command, Item command, etc. This definitely makes Gogo quite a versatile character, as you can pretty much turn him into whatever you want. Gogo, being a mimic and able to equip a lot of different things, but can't really equip any of the ultimate weapons, doesnt really have an ultimate weapon.

Umaro - Umaro, like Gogo, is a hidden character. The only way to get him is to have Mog with you after you beat him in the caves of Narshe. Fighting him is also entirely optional. Either way, you cant command Umaro to fight at all. The only thing you can really do with him is sit there and watch him attack. I can't remember but it may be possible to control him if you have Mog in your party, I'll confirm that and then change this review accordingly later on. You can also get special items to equip on Umaro that will randomly cause him to do a special attack that hits all enemies. One of the special attacks is Blizzard, I cant remember at the moment what the other is. Physically, Umaro is a great fighter, but overall, I wouldnt suggest using him as the other characters are much better. Umaro can't equip...anything. Except for relics of course.

Well, that does it for the characters of Final Fantasy VI, eventually I'll get to making information for Final Fantasy VII as well, but it's been so long since I've played it I'm going to have to play it a little more in order to remember things about it, so this is it for the FF series for now.
