The Aesir Pantheon
|
The Aesir Pantheon is polytheistic in theology and is worshipped in a multitude of worlds and is based on the belief of several realms populated by the Gods, humans, the giants and the sinners. These realms are bonded by the world tree, known as Yggdrasil, which is an ash tree with special powers, its home is rooted in the centre of the realms.
- Niflheim: Nilfheim is the world of the mist, and literally translates as the ‘land of freezing mist’. Dark, cold and clouded in said mist, Nilfheim is unfriendly and is located in the far north, and on the lowest rung of the universe. It is reserved for cold blooded murderers, people who brake their oaths and ner do wellers.
- Midgard: Midgard is the middle realm, the land of mortals. This land is linked to the home of the Gods, Asgard by the rainbow bridge.
- Asgard: Asgard is the home of the gods, led by the mighty Woden. Asgard itself is home to many realms inside its boundaries including Valhalla and more. Asgard is located in the middle of the world, and on the highest rung of the universe. It is populated by the elite gods the Aesir, including such as Woden, his wife Frigg, Thunear and many more.
- Vanaheimr: Vanaheimr or home of the Vanir, is just that. The Vanir are a group of gods that help make up the Aesir, and include Freyja, Frea, and their father Njordr. These gods are known for their association with virility, love, passion and beauty among other things.
- Jotunheim: Jotunheim is the land of the mighty Frost giants, a menace and trouble to the humans and the gods living in the realms. It is from this home in Jotunheim that the giants originated lived and are forces of evil.
- Alfheim: Alfheim is the land of the elves, home to one of two groups of elves. Alfheim is home to the light elves, a race pleasing to the eye, and very beautiful. The other group of elves are the dark elves, they did not live in Alfheim however, but deep in the realm of Svartalfheim.
- Svartalfheim: Svartalfheim is the home of the dark elves, often referred to as swart elves. This realm is the home of the dwarves as well.
- Muspelheim: Muspelheim is the realm of fire, the flame to the ice of Niflheim and ruled by the Giant Surtr. Surtr is the leader of the fire giants that inhabites Muspelheim and is famed for his sword that burnes bright like no other. Its told that the two lands of Muspelheim and Niflheim at some point met, and at this point the fire and ice joined, creating water.
- Helheim: Helheim also known as Hel is the underworld and is home to the being who overseea this realm also called Hel. Hel is the daughter of Loki, and her realm of Helheim is actually situated in Niflheim. Helheim is the place where one goes should they die from natural causes, or more specifically not in battle. Once there, it is impossible to leave, Helheim is surrounded by the river Gjoll and guarded by a devilish giant hound, known as Garm.
- Valhalla: Valhalla is the hall to where the god Woden calls the dead whom he deems worthy of dwelling with him, those who die in glorious battle. The dead who reside in Valhalla, the Einherjar, live a life that would have been the envy of any warrior. All day long, they fight one another, doing countless valorous deeds along the way. But every evening, all their wounds are healed, and they are restored to full health. They are waited on by the beautiful Valkyries. But the einherjar won’t live this charmed life forever. Valhalla’s battle-honed residents are there by the will of Woden, who collects them to come to his aid in the final battle, a battle in which Woden and the einherjar are doomed to die.
