The Lumberjack

A Lumberjack cuts down trees, plain and simple, however the methods and tools used varey greatly from Lumberjack to Lumberjack, however all gain a Skill with an Axe of some kind or another, and all are adept at destroying plants. These hardy souls make their living harvesting the vast forests of the World. Most of they specialize in cutting down one kind of tree, be it giant fernwood, hardwood or stonewood. Lumberjacks are an important part of almost any society; without them there can be no firewood, and therefore no way of surviving harsh winter months. Civilized societies also depend on them to provide the raw materials (i.e., lumber) to construct tools and furniture.

A Lumberjack is just that, he cuts down trees and takes pride in his skill with it. He also trains to improve his skill with his chosen axe. Lumberjacks work in groups usually under the employ of a company or private contractor, when this occurs they are mainly business, however, during breaks they are often found drinking, and merriment. The majority of these roughnecks work hard and play hard. Theirs is a dangerous and uncertain profession, so when they make their money (and most do quite well once their lumber is processed) they tend to spend it quickly, for a lumberjack never knows if he will be alive at the end of the next workday.

People react to Lumberjacks in the reverse of how they would to a druid: those who find nature unimportant, troublesome, or otherwise negative will applaud and respect the Lumberjack; those who revere nature disdain or shun him, or even challenge him to a duel. Some lumber crews are in a state of undeclared war with various forest dwelling creatures who feel these “Intruders” are cutting too deeply into the forests. Others find themselves playing the role of the heroic woodsman when their logging expeditions take them to a part of the forest where there are people in need of a champion to destroy the monsters or villains harassing them. A few lumberjacks, once they have gotten a taste for such adventure, give up tuning for profit and take up their axe as a free adventurer. Kingdoms everywhere are seeing an increasing number of such folk, many of whom are finding steady work as mercenaries, bodyguards, and enforcers of some kind.
