Special forces, or special operations forces are military units given special training not available to regular troopers to perform unconventional missions, This is because their missions are more difficult and hazardous than those of normal soldiers. Special Forces troops are expected to operate with very little support from the rest of the army and engage in "covert" operations that are secret and may have no official support or acknowledgement.
Special forces capabilities include the following:
Depending on the Government, special forces may perform some of the following specializations: air/spaceborne operations, counter-insurgency, "counter-terrorism", covert ops, direct action, hostage rescue, high-value targets/manhunting, intelligence operations, mobility operations, and unconventional warfare. The term “special forces” refers to an army's forces while the term “special operation forces” refers to all units.
Special operations (S.O.) are military operations that are considered unconventional and are usually carried out by dedicated special forces units. Special operations are performed independently or in conjunction with conventional military operations. The primary goal is to achieve a political or military objective where a conventional force requirement does not exist or might adversely affect the overall strategic outcome. Special operations are usually conducted in a low-profile manner that aims to achieve the advantages of speed, surprise, and violence of action against an unsuspecting target. Special ops are typically carried out with limited numbers of highly trained personnel that are able to operate in all environments, utilize self-reliance, easily adapt to and overcome obstacles, and use unconventional combat skills and equipment to complete objectives. Special operations are usually implemented through specific, tailored intelligence
Only large armies can afford the specialized training that produces Special Forces characters. Mercenaries love to recruit these soldiers because their training makes them ideal for the low resources that most merc companies can afford . When they leave the military, these soldiers may become independent operatives, adventurers or market their services as elite bodyguards, protectors, troubleshooters and even as lawmen.
