1991 Canadian Championships -- Interview with Tuffy and Doug after the Parade of Champions.
Johnny Esaw:
The Athlete's Trust Fund has an bursary in my honor. First we give $500 for each member of the National Junior Team -- 13 of them this year -- to help them on their way. Second the award goes to the person or pair somewhere in Canada who overcomes adversity, beats the odds and shows that true grit is, in fact, taking sport to greater heights. The greatest example I have seen in my life happened here in Saskatoon, when Tuffy Hough and Doug Ladret had a terrible fall and despite the odds, got up and skated again and went on to a silver medal. Doug and Tuffy -- Congratulations!! I would like to present a cheque of $1000 from the bursary in your name to the trust fund. Congratulations on how you handled it all. It was a most difficult moment for everybody, doubley more for you.
Tuffy :
Thank you very much. It was such an honor to receive an award because at the time I didn't know what was going to happen. It was very important that we get up and finish what we set out to do.
Doug:
Thank you very much, Mr. Esaw. It was a scary moment. I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to continue; if the rules would allow us to continue. Luckily for us, they did and we got up and started again and did the element and kept on.
Tuffy:
Going.... we kept on going.
Johnny Esaw:
We're glad the rules did and you did. You are now on your way to Munich. And Lots of luck to you.
Tuffy:
Thank you.
