Fourteen year old Ensign Jadzia Janeway looked up from the PADD she was using. “Enadria, what do you know about Earth’s world wars? World War two actually” She asked.
“Not much. Most of the information was lost during Earth’s 3rd World War. I think that the main computer has most of the information.” Cadet Enadria Wildman replied.
“Right, and how am I supposed to access that information when we only have access to the school computer?” Jadzia asked.
“You tell me, after all the Captain is your mom” Enadria said.
“Maybe I’ll do that.” Jadzia said.
“Or you could ask Seven of Nine” Enadria said wickedly.
Jadzia gave her friend a look and left the room. Walking in to the mess hall, she spotted her friend Lieutenant j.g. Jealia Maaqli.
“Hey Jealia, how are you?” She asked.
“Doing a lot better then you are on information” Jealia replied.
“Who did you ask?” Jadzia asked.
“Seven” Jealia said, “You would be amazed at the amount of information she has.”
“Let’s see. Billions of people assimilated into the Borg and only around say three thousand Federation civilians and officers. All right. I believe it.” Jadzia said. “Besides all you had to do was read her main being a Betazed.”
“Ha ha, very funny. I have to get back to Astrometrics or Commander Alaya will be-“ Jealia began.
“Be very mad. I’m sure you do.” Jadzia said walking to the turbolift with her.
Three hours later
Jadzia was trying to find out what the main computer had. It took forever to get permission from the captain, but she got access.
“Computer, display WWII information Section Beta-three-nine.” Jadzia said.
“Accessing.” The computer droned. “World War two started in 1939 as a European conflict between Germany and the Anglo-French coalition, eventually widened to include most nations of Earth. This was ended in 1945. This new world was dominated by the United States of America and the USSR, which later became Russia.”
Putting information as fast as she could in to the PADD she was using, she asked “Computer, display WWII information Atomic Bomb section Delta-four-three.”
The computer chirped than said. “That information is restricted from this terminal on authorization of the Captain.”
Slightly agitated, Jadzia asked the computer “Computer display information Atomic Bomb section Epsilon-seven-twelve.”
“Accessing.” The computer cold voice droned. “Those files are restricted.”
“How’s it going?” Captain Kathryn Janeway asked, walking into the room.
“Huh?” Jadzia asked. “Oh, just fine.”
“Then maybe you’ll stop for dinner?” Janeway asked.
“Dinner?” Jadzia said distracted.
“Yes, Jadzia. The meal that comes after lunch.” Janeway said teasingly.
“Oh, right. I was about to go down to the mess hall.” Jadzia said.
“Ok, that’s fine.” Janeway said.
“Fine.” Jadzia said snapping her console shut. “See you around 220 hours or something.”
“Alright.” Janeway responded. She doesn’t take a hint very easily, she thought.
Walking into the mass hall, Neelix greeted her. “Jadzia! How are you? Can I get you anything?”
“A Raktajino would be nice.” Jadzia responded.
“Sure” Neelix said and brought her the drink. “Anything else?”
“No thanks.” Jadzia said.
“You’re welcome Miss Janeway.” Neelix said hopping off before Jadzia could react.
Walking over to an empty table, Jadzia opened her console again and accessed the Atomic Bomb files again. “Computer, access general atomic file Beta-three.”
“Accessing.” The computer said. “The atomic bomb is any nuclear weapon fueled by fission of the nuclei of specific isotopes of Uranium or Plutonium in a chain reaction. The explosion is equal; to thousands of tons of TNT. This process of fission releases enormous energy in the form of extreme heat and a massive shock wave. This also produces a deadly form of radiation called gamma rays.”
“Computer. How was the atomic bomb related to World War II?” Jadzia asked.
“The code name to develop an atomic bomb in 1942 was the Manhattan Project. Near the end of the War the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on august 6, 1945. A second bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 followed this. The U.S. estimated about 60,000 to 70,000 people killed by the Hiroshima bomb named ‘Little Boy’ and about 40,000 people killed by the Nagasaki bomb called ‘Fat man’. On August 14th, Japan agreed to U.S. terms of surrender.” The computer said.
“Computer, did this bombing help put an end to the war?” Jadzia asked.
“Affirmative.” The computer responded. “Japan agreed to unconditional surrender, and at that same time, Russia declared war on them.”
Three hours later
Captain Janeway walked into the mess hall, sat down by Jadzia and asked “Jadzia, do you have any idea what time it is?”
“No, I don’t” Jadzia said.
“Well it’s 2335 hours.” Janeway said.
“It is?” Jadzia asked. “ I guess I’m a bit late. I got so caught up in this project I lost time.”
“Really, it’s not so bad.” Janeway said. “What are you working on anyway?”
“That project the Doc assigned all of the kids on Voyager.” Jadzia said.
“I see, come on Jads, let’s go home and get some sleep.” Janeway told Jadzia.
“All right, as I get main computer access tomorrow also.” Jadzia said.
“Terms accepted.” Janeway said.
Eight days later
“Jadzia, would you please present you project first?” Doc asked.
“Sure, I would be glad to.” Jadzia answered.
Walking up to the front of the room, she placed an isolinear chip into the large display. Then started to read from the PADD she was holding. “I did my project on the Atomic Bomb during World War II of Earth. There were bomb dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The death total of both bombs was around 100,000 to 110,000 people. Thousands more were injured. As you can see,” She said, indicating the pictures on the display. “The end result was quite devastating.”
“Jadzia, how was the bomb created?” Asked ensign j.g. Jaden Paris.
“The bombs are nuclear weapons fueled by fission of the nuclei of isotopes of uranium or
plutonium in a chain reaction releasing enormous energy in the form of extreme heat and gamma rays, a deadly radiation. Roosevelt set up the Manhattan Project to develop such a device. During the war the U.S. spent more than $2,000,000,000 on this project. The plane that dropped the first bombs was called Enola Gay. The second bomb was dropped by Bock’s Car. The bomb weighed over 4,000kg. Measured 72cm in diameter and 305cm in length. Many people said that these atomic bombs were a crime against humanity. After the war, an agreement was signed not to use atomic bombs anymore, but as we all know, it only lasted 114 years until the start of World War 3. In this war, nuclear weapons killed over 630 billion people.” Jadzia said finishing up.
“Jadzia, are you done?” Doc asked.
Jadzia nodded “Yes sir, I am finished.”
“Great job. Cadet Kim it’s your turn” Doc said.
Jadzia did not rally pay very much attention during the rest of the projects. She was thinking about the things in the past that were so devastating.
