The Memories: By David Matthew Dechane

The Memories On this page you will find the poetic writing of David Matthew Dechane (as seen above in full disco-wear for my after-prom). Most of the poems were written in a rather painful time in his life. . . his relationship with his ex-girlfriend. I've usually found it quite difficult to read these poems of love because they are written to her. Some of the poems he wrote for friends or other inspirations in his life. I have chosen to publish his book of poems, The Memories because of the passion and pain obvious in these writings. I hope you enjoy these beautiful poems of love and heartache.

DISCLAIMER: This page is dedicated to David, my reason for living, my loving boyfriend, the object of my passion. These poems are copyrighted and may only be used with the expressed permission of Melissa James (creator and maintainer of this page) and David Dechane (author of all poems unless specified).

The Memories

Dedicated to everyone that was an inspiration to me.

Introduction

Each page is blank until each word is placed. To find the words, to describe how I feel, that is the challenge. Maybe one day, each page will reveal its secrets to me; until then I just have to keep looking.

"Unseen Things"

I sit here in the darkness and look at the world around me.

The moon is peeking through the purple clouds and shining down on me.

The lake is calm despite the cold breeze that blows.

The wind runs wild through the trees and tickles the wind chime into singing for me.

The night calls to me; its voice whispers in my ear each night, and I'm at peace.

It's times like these I'm thinking of you, and I look;

For the darkness,

For the clouds,

For the calm,

For the wind,

For the peace,

And for you.

What is the man without beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from great lonliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to men. All things are connected. --Chief, Squamish Indian Tribe.

"One Step At A Time"

The waves crash down on the beach, just as you take your first steps into your mothers arms.

As you fell, those arms wrap around you, with a good-bye as you're off for your first day of school.

As you sit down in your desk, you begin to wonder what sixth grade will be like.

As the teacher begins to talk, you say to yourself, "High school isn't that bad."

As you get up to walk out the door, you shed a tear as you say good-bye to all the senior friends.

As you wipe the tear away, your college days go with it.

As you look in the picture frame, remembering, you smile at your wife.

As she looks at you with a smile, you finally get to hold your new son in your arms.

As the waves crash down on the beach again, you look up to see your son take his first step.

It's not the woman in your life, it's the life in your woman. --Unknown

"Sleepless Nights"

One cold dark night, you lie awake in bed again, thinking of her.

As the sun comes up, you rise to face another day, and your mind is restless.

You try to pass the time quickly so you don't have to think about anything.

As the sun sets and darkness comes, you go to her.

You see those gentile eyes staring out at you from the darkness.

Do you dare embrace those eyes and leave all your troubles behind?

As you wrap your arms around her, you look into her eyes again.

Her eyes, her eyes you could get lost in, they burn with emotion.

And as the midnight hour strikes, you go to bed lonely again.

But she is always on your mind, for another sleepless night.

"A Step Not Taken" was written for a girl I know that is a hopeless romantic. She wanted me to write a poem for her. As I've said before, who am I to refuse a beautiful woman. This poem came to be. Nicole Jones basically inspired me to start writing with her reaction to this poem. Thank you Nicole.

"A Step Not Taken"

A breeze, cold with death upon its mist, sweeps away another tear.

Once happy memories of a true love now only slowly tears you apart.

As the waves crash down on the rocks below, one question keeps repeating in your mind.

"Should I take one step off these cliffs and end it all; the pain, and bring me to my true love once again?"

As the waves crash down harder and harder, and the questions get louder and louder in your mind, you take the one step you had not taken.

As the rocks below draw nearer you ask yourself a new question:

"Can I ever take one step, just one step back?"

"If"

If I leave this world tomorrow, I'll die happy;

If the sunrise never comes again, I'll smile.

If the days are long and the nights are slow, I'll be happy;

If I never again feel the warmth of day, I'll smile.

Because no matter what happens I'll be happy,

Because of you.

"Sing Me No Songs of Daylight"

Sing me no songs of daylight, for daylight is the enemy of lovers.

Instead whisper songs of midnight in my ear and never leave my arms.

Tell me how each waking moment is spent thinking of our true love.

Let the night never end, and day never come, so life never has to continue.

Stay with me forever and be happy, because I'll give you everything you ever wished.

So sing me no songs of midnight, instead whisper tales of midnight in my ear.

"Awake"

I wake up with the smell of your hair in the air;

The touch of your skin on my hands;

The thought of you in my arms and I smile,

Because I know I will see you again soon.

If I could keep one moment always shining and new, it would be the time I first kissed you.

"A Closer Look"

Can you see the fire in my eyes?

Can you see how it burns with emotion?

Can you see the flames in my eyes?

Can you see the love in my heart?

Can you see the blue in the flame in my eyes?

Can you see it's the kind softness in my soul?

can you see the light from the flame in my eyes?

Can you see how it shines like my love?

Can you see all these things when you look at me?

For you're the reason they are there.

I was inspired by the movie Titanic.Never in my life has a movie captured my attention like that. Three and a half hours of happiness, laughter, sadness, anger, and joy. Of all the stories I have heard about Titanic, nothing, but nothing comes close to the way Titanic expressed everything.

"A Dream"

You call to me, yet there is no voice.

You sing to me, yet there are no sounds.

The stories that lie in your walls yell out.

The life in your hull is growing by the day.

Each turned corner brings a new beginning.

Each room is a new chapter in your story.

But yet there is a gloom that hangs over you.

But yet the water that fills you is so dark.

You still call to me.

You still sing to me in my dreams.

The stories still yell.

The life in you still grows in my dreams.

Each new beginning;

Each new chapter I record in my dreams.

You live on in my dreams;

And so do all the people that were on you;

Titanic.

I love to do extra credit for school. I even did someone else's, which this poem is the result of. You're welcome Tara.

"To Live" was written in the cafeteria of Hillcrest High School one day. Tara needed a poem for extra credit. Who am I to turn down a beautiful woman in distress? So "To Live" came to be on February 2, 1998.

"To Live"

Another night in my room;

Where goblins hide and evil glooms.

The bed I sleep in creaks and groans;

All night I listen to my sister's moans.

My walls are covered in color and glee;

And I feel like a thousand eyes are staring at me.

As I drift off to sleep, I know I'm in trouble;

Because my dreams are filled with toil and trouble.

Bad guys always win and monsters rule the sea;

And they don't care if with them you beg and plead.

Everyone must walk the plank;

To make room for the bad guys who just knocked off the bank.

If you're lucky enough to make it to land, you're in trouble;

Because madmen will surely chase you through the rubble.

Skeletons dance with glee each night;

And I get filled with fear and fright.

Each morning I'll wake in a cold sweat, but I'm hot;

Thanking my stars that my dreams are where I'm not.

I rise yet again to face another day;

So I go outside yet again to play.

I pretend to beat all the goblins and the robbers;

And I take their ship far off into the waters.

I'll have adventures and live a long life on the sea;

And I'm convinced that no one has a good a life as me.

Inspired by Garth Brooks's song "If Tomorrow Never Comes".

"For Stephanie"

The twilight of another day is upon me and I think of you.

Time passes me by and I often realize how much I take for granted. . . too late.

If I leave this world tomorrow, or even tonight, I want you to know that I love you.

The feelings are there, I just have a hard time showing them.

If I can ever have the happiness of memories with me, it would be the time I held you in my arms,

And the world was right.

My final poem to Tracy. (Written while David was at Boot Camp for the United States Marine Corps on Parris Island.)

"In a Blink of an Eye"

If I looked in your eyes, would they burn with desire?

If I came close, would I feel your sweet breath?

If I closed your eyes, would you beg for my touch?

If I kissed your sweet lips, could we ever pull away?

If I held you in my arms, could I ever let you go?

If I made love to you, could I ever sleep?

If I lay next to you, could I ever get up?

If I touched your soft skin could I ever pull away?

If you looked in my eys, could you see them burn with desire?

David Matthew Dechane, 09/28/98

And that's the last poem he ever wrote. All of these poems span a time between January 1998 and September 1998. These were written during and directly after his senior year in high school. He is published in the National Library of Poetry with a poem he wrote in high school. He's a very passionate person with a love for life, his job, and for me. I don't know why he's never written again. As I've said, it is very painful to read these poems of love to Tracy (who's story we won't even get into), but I think they are beautiful and need to be shared with all who view this website.
