Cymbals

His Oysterhead setup

The chart at the top may seem confusing. "Why's there 3 choices of cymbals for each cymbal???" one may ask. The reason I put each cymbal into a section of 3 is that I found 3 sources from different time periods that gave me different cymbals he was using at different times. On the chart, a) = the set up that www.paiste.com has listed; b) is the set up in the May '84 issue of Downbeat magazine; and c) is the set up in the October 1982 issue of Modern drummer. Hope that clears it up for you. Below this are excerpts from the 2 magazines mentioned, if you read those you'll see why I have an "or" and confusing things on the chart. The cymbal set up on this page may not be as accurate to the T of how Stewart's cymbal set up is now or was before, but I assure you it's close. Blah, blah, blah, just read the stuff below...

Stewart's thoughts on Paiste's Signature line of cymbals:

WFM: I notice that you still use a good amount of cymbals, including splashes and all. Are you using the new Paiste Signature line?

SC: I have a set in England, but I'm not using them on the road. Paiste is selling so many of those cymbals they don't have enough left for their humble endorsees. So I want to keep them home safe. But I think they're just brilliant cymbals. They're a quantum leap ahead of any other cymbal out there. I hate to sound like advertising copy here, but Paiste has really landed on something special. Throughout the entire line they sound great.

Cymbally speaking, on-stage it's Formula 602 13-inch medium hi-hats (without Sound Edge) and a 16-inch thin crash, two eight-inch 2002 bell cymbals, two eight and an 11-inch 2002 splashes, and RUDE 14-, 16-, and 22-inch crash-rides; in the studio Formula 2002 16- and 18-inch mediums, and a 22-inch 602 heavy ride replace the RUDES.

May, 1984 issue of Downbeat magazine

Jeff Seitz on Stewart's cymbals:

..on anY other day. We're now using all Paiste, a new kind called the Rude. We have a 24"; ride, two 18"; crash/rides, two 16"; crash/rides, an 8" ice bell, which is a special little pitched cymbal, and Paiste 2002 hi-hats which are 13";. And we're using something called an Ictus, which is another ice bell which is a sort of metallic bell-sounding cymbal, and it is also 8";. He also uses 8"; and 10"; splash cymbals and also a Chinese swish cymbal.

Stewart talking about the baby splashes:

I like small cymbals, little bell cymbals and splash cymbals, and I like to just have them all over the place so I can hit one of them in between hitting other things. These little cymbal attachments that you can stick on anywhere are great for that.
