The Good Bye
My mother was ill for several years. She had several close calls. I took her to the doctor one Monday morning. She was so ill that we had to use an ambulance. On the way home she told me she was not going back to the doctor. I told her she was tired and she would feel better tomorrow. The next day I talked to her on the phone and she said she was very tired. I told her I would be down the next morning to fix her hair and to sit and talk. When I arrived the following morning, she told me that her mother was sitting on the couch when she woke up that morning. I thought she had been dreaming. I asked her what she had been wearing and she described exactly how I remembered her. I asked her if she said anything. Mother replied that she said "Mary Lou , it's time for you to come home." I said "Do you mean like when you were a child?" She said. " Yes, like when I was young".
When I looked at my mother, she seemed to be looking over my shoulder at something in the distance. I kissed her good bye and told her if she felt like going home not to worry about us. We would understand. She kissed my hand and said "Take care." I called her again the next day but I had a cold and did not want to be around her. The next morning I awoke to the sound of the ambulance passing my house. Mother had gone home
