Archer
Avenue is haunted by a female phantom hitch-hicker
nicknamed "Resurrection Mary", because she
is buried in Resurrection Cemetary in the same area.
She is identifiable from her attractive 1920s
costume, her blonde hair and blue eyes and she always
asks to be dropped off at the cemetary!
In
Decenber 1977 a motorist saw her peering through the
iron bars of the cemetary gates. The story is that
she was a Polish girl who had a row with her
boyfriend and was knocked down by a car on her way
home from a dance in 1934. She has been witnessed
fairly regularly since then.
In 1939
she terrified one driver by jumping on the
running-board of his car. Rumors has it that she also
puts in an appearance at the old ballroom where she
spent her last evening. In Mary's day it was O'Henry
Ballroom, nowadays it is called the Willowbrook
Ballroom. There she is said to mingle with the other
dancers. Men who have unwittingly partnered her have
said that her skin is icy cold and she seemed rather
aloof. Sightings of her have increased since the
mid-1970s when the cemetary was renovated which
possibly disturbed her ghost even more. The cemetary
itself is also haunted by ghostly monks who were seen
late in 1977 by police officers.
The ghosts
vanished as the law approached.
