May, 1999 Newsletter
Next Meeting - The next meeting will be Monday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. At Danny Kight's house. All members and guests are invited to attend, find the directions to his house in this issue. He's going to give us a tour of the 'RV-6 factory' !
April Meeting – We had 15 members and visitors. There's a good write up of the 'new' B-52 in the March,99 Popular Mechanics. Danny talked about his new engine for the RV-6 and showed us the ANR headphones and GPS he bought to go in the plane. Bill Binford brought in some displays and an old Dead Reckoning controller he bought at an aircraft graveyard. Lotsa zero backlash gears and differentials, a real mechanical work of art. Years ago I worked on a redesign of a Navy fire solution computer for the big guns. The old unit was the size of a small walk-in closet, had the history of semi-ellipsoid gears and cosine cam followers, etc. - a real watchmaker's project. Ex Navy buddy told me he was trained on this box and said it was accurate as can be, just hard to maintain. We replaced it with a computer chip, a competitor of the IBM-XT, and had about 90% of the box volume left over.
NOTAM - If there is a RED DOT on your address label, you are late with Chapter dues. See Dave Meyer with $12 in your hand and join the 'paid in full' flyers around you! This may be your last warning…
NOTAM2 - As the World Turns - The main runway at GMU (Greenville Downtown has been renumbered as 1/19. We found that out at the recent Young Eagles flight…
Young Eagles Update I - This past Saturday, Tim Cotter, Ira McKinney, Dave Meyer and I flew 35 ROTC students at GSP. Ira had comm. troubles and Tim had a short schedule - we could have used another pilot!
Young Eagles Update II - The goal for EAA Young Eagles is for every member to fly 10 children in 1999. Stevens Aviation is planning a Rally for September at GSP - they always put on a real professional show. Share the thrill of personal aviation with the next generation. Sign up and help the next time a Young Eagle's Rally is announced.
Cassutt project for sale - Factory welded fuselage, tail feathers and control system. Wing is complete and project is on gear. Lower cowl and racing canopy included. Asking $2800 for all. Dan Arblaster (864) 306-8538 jda20@juno.com Williamsport airfield (Easley)
Directions to Danny Kight's House - From I-85 southbound, take exit 21 (hwy 178). Go south (back over the interstate) toward Anderson. In about a mile, the road forks. Take the right fork (hwy 28). At the second traffic light, turn right onto Whitehall Rd. (There is a Shell station on the right corner.)
The road will curve sharply to the left in front of the Centerville fire department. At the first light, turn left onto Centerville Rd. Go about 1/4 mile, and turn right into Regency Park subdivision. There is a big sign at the entrance. At the stop sign, turn right onto Regency Circle. Go straight through the stop sign at Tiffany. We are the 11th house on the left, at the top of the hill. The house is two story, yellow, with blue trim. Park in the driveway or on the street.
Call 224-6043 if you think the house has moved.
Flying Tales -
Any other I learned about flying from that type stories from the members would be appreciated, both for the lessons learned the cheap way and for their story value.
AGL (A good laugh) Button Fun

Friendly checkout clerk. Thanks for keeping me that way!
Does your train of thought have a caboose?
Errors have been made. Others will be blamed.
I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for 30 years.
