Preterite


The preterite is the past tense, basically. There are some other forms of the past tense, but the preterite is the first and simpilest of them. The preterite is used when speaking of thing occuring once in the past. It isn't used when you are referring to something that happend over a period of time in the past. That is another part of speach. The conjugation of the preterite is this:

-ar Verbs
Singular Plural
First -amos
Second -aste
Third -aron
-er Verbs
Singular Plural
First -imos
Second -iste
Third -ió -ieron
-ir Verbs
Singular Plural
First -imos
Second -iste
Third -ió -ieron
hablar - to speak
Singular Plural
First hablé hablamos
Second hablaste
Third habló hablaron
comer - to eat
Singular Plural
First comí comimos
Second comiste
Third comió comieron
viver - to live
Singular Plural
First viví vivimos
Second viviste
Third vivió vivieron
