The time for a new car came when a tourist in car on a cell phone hit and killed my 1991 Toyota Corolla with 191,000 miles on it. I loved the Mini Coopers, and after a test drive I was sold.
Although the Mini Cooper is the smallest car currently sold in the United States, it really does drive "big," meaning that you have the sensation of driving in a much larger sports car. The acceleration is fantastic, and since the wheels are pushed out to the very corners of the car, it takes hairpin curves like it is on rails. You really have to drive one to believe it.
As for interior room, there is plenty. I am a fairly tall guy, standing 6'3", and I have always pushed the driver's seat all the way back in every car I have ever gotten in to drive (including SUVs), EXCEPT FOR THE MINI! The front seats are mounted on rails that go all the way back, a very smart and efficient idea, utilizing all of the room available in the car. In the Mini, I actually have to pull the front seat UP a bit to drive!
There is plenty of room in the back seat. I can ride in the back very comfortably, and regularly drive my daughter (and sometimes two of her friends) to school in it. The real test was grocery shopping - I got two adults, one child, and eleven bags of groceries in the Mini comfortably, with room to spare! Believe it or not!
