The SNP (founded in 1934) is the political party that argues the case for Scottish independence.
The SNP vote has grown rapidly since 1955 when the Party gained 12,112 votes.
At the General Election
on May 1st 1997 the SNP polled over 600,000 votes and now has 6 seats at Westminster.
With the first ever elections to the Devolved Scottish Parliament in May 1999 the SNP was in
its best position to challenge new Labour - an election on home ground. The SNP won 35 seats
