Devenie on Acting and Family

chat_guest2001: Any final questions for Stephen?

bummer2323: Where you surprised by the fan following?

japjoea: What did you do in between takes to relax?

Jordi32196: Just tell Stephen I thought he was wonderful in his role. :-)

chat_guest2001: on relaxing....

sirenia2525: Yes, he was a great Captain

Mayfair51: And that we miss him, all of you!

chat_guest2001: he drank tea, coffee, and smoked cigarettes

chat_guest2001: and did the cryptic crosswords

japjoea: You will all be sorlly missed!!

indianajgirl44: yep!!!

japjoea: HAHAHA!

bummer2323: WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!

sirenia2525: is he good at those puzzles?

chat_guest2001: He says he misses you as well!

Jordi32196: Tell him to visit the message board soon, I'll have something up there for you guys. :-)

chat_guest2001: on the puzzles - I helped him with the harder ones

blacky_blacky: he made a perfect foil for Jack!!!

jackaltrades: Did he do any improvisation on the "infamous" licking scene with Blackbeard?

bummer2323: We've really enjoyed chatting with you both, it would be so nice to see you both on the message board when possible

japjoea: We would love it if he could do this again soon.

chat_guest2001: on Blackbeard.....

chat_guest2001: he says the problem was the touching up of the makeup

bummer2323: Ewwww...

chat_guest2001: Hori kept licking the makeup off

jackaltrades: (I thought his expressions were hilarious during that scene!)

sirenia2525: LOL!

bummer2323: yuck!

indianajgirl44: yuck!

indianajgirl44: heheheh

chat_guest2001: (they knew each other before the shoot)

blacky_blacky: i loved Blackbeard!!! and Nardo!!!

bummer2323: LOL!

chat_guest2001: on the fan following....

Jordi32196: LOL

jackaltrades: I believe they both had parts in The Piano Lesson?

japjoea: That was a great scene. Especially, considering he made it though it at all

Shirley_LeVasseur: Hori is like a living cartoon

sirenia2525: Hori did, I know

chat_guest2001: He wasn't really surprised, because he felt the show had a real quality to it

sirenia2525: or The Piano

japjoea: Without laughing I mean.

chat_guest2001: It's all shot on 35 mm film

chat_guest2001: but the cost is so low here

jackaltrades: (Sorry, that's what I meant.)

chat_guest2001: so you can create a high quality visual look

chat_guest2001: you can see an enormous depth in the scenes

chat_guest2001: the effect of the light is more subtle and has more depth

japjoea: They should release all the eps on video.

Shirley_LeVasseur: dvd

bummer2323: both

blacky_blacky: never mind the videos...just put the show back on!!!

japjoea: Bummer's right, both.

Shirley_LeVasseur: lol

bummer2323: LOL

chat_guest2001: Stephen is now off the line

bummer2323: NO!

fuhbug joined c_samraimi:1.

chat_guest2001: and he wishes everyone a Merry Christmas

japjoea: BRAVO BLACKY!!

Shirley_LeVasseur: :)

indianajgirl44: that's nice

Mayfair51: It was so nice of him to join us!

chat_guest2001: I'm still here, however! :)

sirenia2525: yes, it was

bummer2323: Yippee

indianajgirl44: **cheers**

jackaltrades: Merry Christmas + thanks for the good work entertaining us all!

bummer2323 applauds chat_guest2001.

Jordi32196: Stuart, thank you for getting Stephen into contact with us! I'd hoped to hear from him. :-)

Mayfair51: We love you Stuart!

Shirley_LeVasseur: how long did you play Frank N Furter?

bummer2323: Love your stuff!

blacky_blacky: tell me something...why did napoleon and thegovernour have two different last names?

indianajgirl44: yeah!

chat_guest2001: on Frankenfurter....

Mayfair51: Different fathers? bummer2323: never thought of that, blacky

chat_guest2001: we did a 6 month tour in NZ

chat_guest2001: it was such fun!

Shirley_LeVasseur: I bet!

Stuart, Mark Hadlow, + Jennifer

chat_guest2001: It was called the *New* Rocky Horror Show

bummer2323: didn't napoleon change his to sound more french?

blacky_blacky: and why did the governor's wife have an american accent? (excuse the spelling!!)

chat_guest2001: it was directed and designed in Australia

chat_guest2001: very very high tech

chat_guest2001: an excellent cast

japjoea: Hey, that's great, the party ain't over yet. But please wish Stuart a merry Christmas for all of us

chat_guest2001: when I got the call to audition for it

chat_guest2001: I thought I was auditioning for the Narrator

bummer2323: i'd like to see stuart in rocky horror

Shirley_LeVasseur: lol "no neck"

chat_guest2001: because I was 43 at the time

bummer2323: LOL...rude awakening

japjoea: How much did he enjoy playing Franky in Rocky

chat_guest2001: I thought it was blow for people over 40

chat_guest2001: I really enjoyed it

bummer2323: If you could play any role at all, what would it be?

Shirley_LeVasseur: cool

chat_guest2001: when they shifted the scene (i.e. moved the production) from Auckland to Wellington

chat_guest2001: in the opening scene, when Frank comes down the elevator...

chat_guest2001: his heels are 5" heels

Shirley_LeVasseur: OMG

sirenia2525: yikes!

chat_guest2001: I had gotten used to the feel of the set and the steps

Mayfair51: Sexy! LOL!

indianajgirl44: whoa!

chat_guest2001: they had lowed the floor by 3 inches (from the Wellington setup) without telling me

japjoea: What is your favorite memory from the show, either in front of or behind the sceancs

Shirley_LeVasseur: uh oh

sirenia2525: oh boy

chat_guest2001: with those heels, that's quite a difference

chat_guest2001: so I very nearly fell over

bummer2323: OUCH

indianajgirl44: ouch

Mayfair51: Kodak moment!

sirenia2525: oh no

sirenia2525: lol Mayfair

chat_guest2001: Mark Hadlow (who played King George) was Riff Raff

Shirley_LeVasseur: ha!

japjoea: My favorite character!

chat_guest2001: Jennifer Ward Lealand was Janet Weiss

joxersfan: I have to go! Thank you for chatting, Stuart! Say Hello to Stephen for me! Please join the JoaT MB! We'd love to have you there!

chat_guest2001: I saw her last night in fact (ed. note: at the Auckland Theatre Company's Christmas party, where he "plugged" the chat to Kevin Smith and others)

joxersfan left c_samraimi:1.

Shirley_LeVasseur: Weisssssss!

chat_guest2001: she just finished playing the Witch in "Into The Woods" for the Aukland Theatre Co.

chat_guest2001: She sends her regards to everyone

Shirley_LeVasseur: :)

japjoea: Bye Joxersfan, will you be on later?

chat_guest2001: Michael (her husband, Michael Hurst) is directing a Xena episode at the moment

bummer2323: jenna is already gone...

jackaltrades: I was wondering if you appeared in the Canadian-NZ co-production "The Ray Bradbury Theater"?

chat_guest2001: His feature film "Jubilee" did very well here...

japjoea: Oh well, I'll drop her a line later.

fuhbug left c_samraimi:1.

japjoea: I missed that

Mayfair51: Stuart, if would you like to do something more than acting? Directing, perhaps?

Mayfair51: What did I say?LOL

chat_guest2001: "Vertical Limit" has just opened over there, and I believe Angie is over in America with Tem (i.e. Temuera Morrison) for the premiere

chat_guest2001: so that's why she's not here

bummer2323: DARNIT

sirenia2525: oh wow

indianajgirl44: no wonder!

chat_guest2001: To Shirley -by the way, I think the website you've made for Josh is wonderful!

japjoea: Oh well...

Shirley_LeVasseur: gosh *blush*

fuhbug joined c_samraimi:1.

Shirley_LeVasseur: (thanks! It's all Josh's fault))

chat_guest2001: Actually, Maribel, I started out as a director

chat_guest2001: I've done an awful lot of stage and radio and television work

Mayfair51: Cool!!!

chat_guest2001: no film work yet

sirenia2525: Stuart, it was nice chatting with you. Thank you for doing this. I have to go now. Merry Christmas!

chat_guest2001: And I have no particular preference between stage and television work

sirenia2525 left c_samraimi:1.

bummer2323: you're on a first name basis, mayfair!

fuhbug left c_samraimi:1.

Jordi32196: Later Melody...

Mayfair51: Blushes!!

bummer2323: what's your favorite role that you've played so far.

chat_guest2001: My favorite role....

chat_guest2001: that's a tough one

japjoea left c_samraimi:1.

chat_guest2001: Certainly on television, it would be Croque

chat_guest2001: on stage....

bummer2323: KNEW IT

indianajgirl44: of course! :D

chat_guest2001: it would be Arnold from "Torch Song Trilogy"

bummer2323: cool

chat_guest2001: (The Harvey Fierstein character)

chat_guest2001: and Uncle Vanya - in the Chekhov play

bummer2323: I would love to see more of your work, hopefully someday.....

jackaltrades: Is there any specific style of comedy (or drama) that you particularly enjoy doing?

Shirley_LeVasseur: cool (Uncle Vanya)

blacky_blacky: if you dont mind my asking...how old are you?

chat_guest2001: my favorite style of comedy or drama.....

chat_guest2001: I like the kind of comedy that Croque represents

chat_guest2001: About 15 years ago I was in The Miser" by Moliere

chat_guest2001: and I played the title character - a similar character to Croque

chat_guest2001: I like to play characters that have weaknesses

chat_guest2001: the narrow universe that those characters have provides a lot of possibilities

chat_guest2001: characters with a lot of blind spots are fun to play

Mayfair51: I know what you mean

chat_guest2001: and of course they teach you about your own blind spots

bummer2323: Then Croque must have been great fun!!

jackaltrades: In many of his interviews Bruce Campbell has mentioned the same thing: that he doesn't enjoy playing characters/heros that are perfect but would rather play flawed ones.

Mayfair51: Do you sing?

japjoea joined c_samraimi:1.

chat_guest2001: I agree.

chat_guest2001: Bruce's hero was incredibly bumbling

Mayfair51: But cute!

bummer2323: loved it when he fell into windows....

chat_guest2001: Jack had a strong desire to be Zorro, but didn't quite get there

Shirley_LeVasseur: lol

indianajgirl44: 4 real!!!

jackaltrades: (It's one of the reasons I enjoyed the show: the characters were comedically human!)

bummer2323: that's what made him so loveable. he was human

Jordi32196: LOL :-)

chat_guest2001: That's what gives him the humanity

chat_guest2001: he wasn't perfect

japjoea left c_samraimi:1.

bummer2323: exactly!

chat_guest2001: on singing

chat_guest2001: I do

Mayfair51: Wow!

bummer2323: zorro...I like that...LOL

chat_guest2001: I'm not a trained singer

chat_guest2001: but I'm an actor who can move

chat_guest2001: and an actor who can hold a tune

bummer2323: i'd like to hear that...see what we're missing!

chat_guest2001: I've done 10-12 musicals over the years

chat_guest2001: Rocky Horror

chat_guest2001: Into the Woods

chat_guest2001: Assassins (both by Stephen Sondheim)

blacky_blacky: then Croque should have performed the opera he wrote himself!!!! hahaha

bummer2323: Wow...10-12..??

indianajgirl44: hehehehehehe

Mayfair51: That would have rocked!

chat_guest2001: Kiss Me Kate (as one of the gangsters - "Brush up your Shakespeare")

bummer2323: LOL

japjoea joined c_samraimi:1.

jackaltrades: (True, instead of that notorious hack, Gianni (spelling?))

Mayfair51: I love Kiss me Kate!

chat_guest2001: Noel and Gertie (about Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence)

chat_guest2001: For years, I thought I couldn't sing

jackaltrades: (Sorry, was that Luciani? from Mad Opera!)

chat_guest2001: then I worked with a musical director who told me I could

chat_guest2001: Of course it's hugely technical (i.e. singing)

chat_guest2001: but we become embarrassed about singing, when we shouldn't - it's like a mental block

japjoea: Help, I keep getting tossed out of this room!!

Mayfair51: But the talent is there

chat_guest2001: don't let anyone tell you that you can't sing

chat_guest2001: it's as natural as speaking

bummer2323: there you go!

Mayfair51: Great advice!

indianajgirl44: uh-huh!!!

Jordi32196: What sort of personal hobbies are you interested in, Stuart?

chat_guest2001: Hobbies...well, those would include....

chat_guest2001: gardening

bummer2323: You know, I liked Stuart before, but this has just reinforced that ...

chat_guest2001: reading about history and psycholgy

chat_guest2001: and writing letters to politicians

japjoea: What kind of music do you enjoy

Jordi32196: LOL

bummer2323: ack...politics

chat_guest2001: (I only harass our NZ politicians though)

Mayfair51: Send Bush one,hee, hee.

chat_guest2001: I make it a point to disagree with anyone who is power

indianajgirl44: hahahahaha!!

jackaltrades: Are there any particular periods or cultures in history, or subjects in psychology that you enjoy reading about?

chat_guest2001: History...

bummer2323: maybe you should run for office..LOL

Mayfair51: I'm with ya, Stuart

Jordi32196: We can't get away from politics in Florida these days...

bummer2323: LOL

chat_guest2001: I like the period from the Elizabethan Era to about 1700 - I find it fascinating

indianajgirl44: hehehhe

chat_guest2001: Our modern political systems in NZ were initially formed in England at that point

japjoea: "Hi, I live in Florida, but can I be recounted

chat_guest2001: My daughter is very good in history

bummer2323: i bet august's fingers are about to fall off

jackaltrades: (Please come to Canada.... so many of our politicians deserve to be disagreed with!)

Shirley_LeVasseur: ha

chat_guest2001: she got the history prize in her final year in high school

japjoea: Yeah really

blacky_blacky: how many children do you have?

Shirley_LeVasseur: what does your daughter think of JOAT

japjoea: She must be very proud of you

indianajgirl44: VERY!!

chat_guest2001: I have one daughter

chat_guest2001: called Laurel

chat_guest2001: she's 17

bummer2323: what a pretty name!

japjoea: I would love it if my parent were doing this for a living.

blacky_blacky: very pretty!

japjoea: I love her name!

indianajgirl44: yep

chat_guest2001: Laurel has done quite well...

Mayfair51: Do you encourage her to act?

chat_guest2001: part of my contract has been if I am away...

chat_guest2001: for a long time, she gets a round trip to visit

Mayfair51: Cool!

chat_guest2001: so she's been all over the country with me

bummer2323: very cool

indianajgirl44: wow

chat_guest2001: I didn't encourage her to act, but she does

bummer2323: LOL

jackaltrades: Given your penchant for comedy, are you a fan of any comedy groups (e.g. Monty Python)?

chat_guest2001: she actually won a competition on one of our TV channels

chat_guest2001: It was called "Young Film Makers"

chat_guest2001: she was one of the finalists

Mayfair51: Following ger dad's footsteps

indianajgirl44: hehehehe

chat_guest2001: her 8-minute film was shown on national television!

blacky_blacky: did she ever do a shot obn JOAT?

chat_guest2001: and she did that all by herself, really, although of course I was available if she wanted to ask me the odd question

bummer2323: something to be proud of , for sure!

bummer2323: good question!

chat_guest2001: No, she never did JoAT

chat_guest2001: when she came to the set...

bummer2323: too bad!

japjoea: I unfortunatly have to take me leave now. I will see some of you on the board tommorow. I'm glad that both of our guest took this time out of their busy schedual. I want to wish them both a very merry christmas and a happy new year. As for the rest of you guy's I'll see you later. Bye

chat_guest2001: she said "This is outrageous that you have so much fun, and get paid for it!"

bummer2323: bye, joe!

bummer2323: LOL!!

Shirley_LeVasseur: LOL

indianajgirl44: hehe

jackaltrades: (Bye!)

indianajgirl44: c-ya jap

Shirley_LeVasseur: the best kind of job

bummer2323: must be nice to be paid for having fun!

Shirley_LeVasseur: bye joe

chat_guest2001: on Python

chat_guest2001: yes, very much

jackaltrades: (It must be one of the great pleasures of life to work at something that you really enjoy doing!)

chat_guest2001: they've just started repeating it on one of the channels here

chat_guest2001: it's a very English style of humor

chat_guest2001: It certainly is a pleasure

chat_guest2001: If you don't enjoy it, it's the worst job in the world

bummer2323: like any other job.....sigh

chat_guest2001: Our job is like being a "psychonaut"

Shirley_LeVasseur: what's the New Zealand style of humor, compared to British or American?

chat_guest2001: an astronaut for the psyche

bummer2323: LOL

Mayfair51: Good one!

bummer2323:

jackaltrades: (cool neologism)

chat_guest2001: I've done Macbeth and Uncle Vanya...

chat_guest2001: where you have to mine the darker side of human nature

chat_guest2001: you have to be quite vehement in doing that

bummer2323: I'd like to see him in macbeth

chat_guest2001: Ultimately it teaches you about compassion

Mayfair51: Ever thought of doing a Broadway show?

japjoea left c_samraimi:1.

chat_guest2001: on Broadway...

chat_guest2001: well, in my dreams

bummer2323: ACK...LOL

Jordi32196: Maybe you can answer something that's been bugging me. Was Bruce's ponytail real? LOL

blacky_blacky: i think you would be awesome in the iceman cometh!!

Mayfair51: All of our dreams, too

jackaltrades: Speaking of compassion: one of main reasons I enjoyed JOAT was that it wasn't mean-spirited. Even though the characters had an adversarial relationship, it was just played for laughs.

chat_guest2001: I did one project in America

chat_guest2001: about 12 years ago

Mayfair51: Yes?

chat_guest2001: called "221B Baker Street"

bummer2323: ??

Mayfair51: Holmes!

Shirley_LeVasseur: Holmes? :)

chat_guest2001: It was an interactive video game

chat_guest2001: It was based on a board game

bummer2323: wow....

indianajgirl44: cool

chat_guest2001: of the same name

Shirley_LeVasseur: who were you?

chat_guest2001: Mark Hadlow was in it too

chat_guest2001: I was Holmes

Shirley_LeVasseur: cool!

indianajgirl44: tight!!

Mayfair51: I knew it!

Shirley_LeVasseur: great character

blacky_blacky: i hate to back track but was the pony tail real? i was wondering that myself...espesially in the pig sty

chat_guest2001: Also I've worked in Britain and Europe for about 3 years, 20 years ago

indianajgirl44: i doubt it blacky

chat_guest2001: I want to continue to work in NZ, however

bummer2323: OH....for margui.....was the mask in ....what was that episode....where Jack pulls it out of his vest......was it a real mask of not????

chat_guest2001: the audience is here

chat_guest2001: and of course, the global audience is changing

Mayfair51: How so?

blacky_blacky: well it was fastened really tight then cause she had a really tight grip on it!!!

chat_guest2001: My daughter Laurel has been chosen to go to London to work at the Globe Theatre for 3 weeks

bummer2323: OOHH, cool honor

Shirley_LeVasseur: sweet

jackaltrades: (quite prestigious!)

chat_guest2001: That sort of opportunity is available today for young people

Jordi32196: It was Monkey Business, bummer. *g*

chat_guest2001: due to the changing nature of global economy

Mayfair51: She must be very good, then

bummer2323: thanks, jordi! My memory is failing me tonight....for some reason....

chat_guest2001: New Zealanders are great travellers

chat_guest2001: You can't spend your entire life here

chat_guest2001: you have to realize there is another world out there

Mayfair51: All islanders are, right, August?

chat_guest2001: whereas the States are so huge

Shirley_LeVasseur: but New Zealand is wonderful

blacky_blacky: but some parts of it are really small like where i live

chat_guest2001: And no, sadly Jack's pony tail was not real

jackaltrades: (It has one of the largest ranges of different habitats/climatic zones)

bummer2323: HA!

indianajgirl44: told ya!

blacky_blacky: but your advice is right on the mark

bummer2323: cool tidbit

chat_guest2001: The North Island of NZ is volcanic;

bummer2323: i figured it wasn't....but

blacky_blacky: you must think were crazy but the smallest detail puts us into orbit!!!

jackaltrades: (.... and giant squids! ...maybe)

Jordi32196: Aww, phooey... LOL

chat_guest2001: the south island is glacial, with fjords

chat_guest2001: very diverse geography and topography

Jordi32196: Em pulled it so hard! LOL

indianajgirl44: hehehehhee

blacky_blacky: what place to you is the most beautiful youve ever seen?

bummer2323: just chalk it up to Bruce's acting ability, Jordi!

blacky_blacky: well she had to pull it hard he was stuck in the mud...literally!!!! lol

jackaltrades: (and AD's: she made it look like she was pulling it)

Shirley_LeVasseur: (pinin' for the fjords)

jackaltrades: (... Lumberjack of all Trades....)

bummer2323: did i miss the mask answer?

Jordi32196: LOLOL Jackal...

bummer2323: LOL...lumberjack??

indianajgirl44: he didn't answer it bummer

blacky_blacky: what was the mask question? im sorry i got distracted

Jordi32196: Nope Bummer...

jackaltrades: (... since the Dead Parrot sketch goes right into the Lumberjack song)
