WILSON FAMILY

A Brief History of the Formation of
Oconee County,South Carolina.

The area known as Pendleton District, South Carolina lay within the unorganized
Indian Lands from 1769-1789. Lands were taken from the Cherokee Indians
during the American Revolution.
In 1789,Pendleton County was formed, but South Carolina reorganized in 1791. Nine Districts existed.
WASHINGTON, PINCKNEY, NINETY-SIX, ORANGEBURG, CAMDEN,
CHERAW, GEORGETOWN, CHARLESTON and BEAUFORT.
Washington District encompassed the Counties of Pendleton and Greenville.
Washington District was abolished in 1800
and Pendleton County became Pendleton District. In 1826, Pendleton District
was divided into Pickens and Anderson Districts.
Pickens District encompassed present day Oconee and Pickens county.
Oconee CO.,S.C. was formed in 1868 from Pickens District.
