THE PLACE FOR LINKS TO INFORMATION
ON THE LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM.
Hi,
I decided to design this web site
to provide Linux newbies with some information and links to other great
web sites dedicated to the best operating system available (my opinion
of course). I have been using Linux for a little over a year now
and I am still learning the OS. I am currently using Mandrake
Linux 5.3. I have used Red Hat,
S.U.S.E.,
Caldera,
Debain,
and Linux Pro,. All of the distributions
I have tried are good but I like the pre configured KDE (GUI based desktop)
included with Mandrake Linux. There are several great sites on the
internet to buy Linux CD's. I have a page of links to these and many
other Linux related sites
here. The CD's usually cost between $1.99 and $10.00 per version.
I recommend that you buy two or three different Linux distributions and
try them out. Once you pick the one you like best, stick with it.
You will also want to purchase a book or two on Linux, my choice for the
best beginners books are The No B.S. Guide to Linux by Bob Rankin
and Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours by Bill Ball. Both
books are available at amazon.com.
I would recommend that you go through one of these books BEFORE
you try to install and run Linux unless you have prior UNIX experience.
Linux is a great OS but it is not the easiest to install and configure,
although that has gotten much better in the last year and is getting even
better as I type this. Please take a look at the links on my link
page. I am not being paid for listing them, they are my choices as
the best Linux info and services sites. If you have any questions
or comments please e-mail me at chris22@topsurf.com.
This is my first time creating an information oriented web site so if you
have ideas that might help the site, please let me know. I really
want to make Linux information easier for people to find. Any feedback
would be greatly appreciated. I hope this page is helpful.
