Mon Calamari...born and raised. Ackbar has risen from humble beginnings to become a renowned militray strategist for the Rebellion and the New Republic. His championing of the Rebel Alliance, after conquering his own inbred caution, played a major role in the Rebel's defeat of Imperial forces during the Galactic Civil War. He prefers to lead major assaults personally, and his troops still call him Admiral even though he is now of higher rank. Like other Mon Calamari, Ackbar has salmon-colored skin, large, bulbous yellow orange eyes, and webbed hands and feet. He was the leader of Coral Depths City when Imperial forces invaded and nearly destoryed the planet.
Ackbar was one of the first to be enslaved and he eventually became an interpreter for Grand Moff Tarkin. It was from Tarkin that Ackbar first heard bloomings of the Rebellion, as well as veiled references to a new super weapon (Death Star) that would crush the Rebellion.
During a Rebel attempt to assassinate Tarkin, Ackbar was rescued and helped convince his species to actively support the Rebellion. Amoung the hardware that the Mon Calamari contributed to the Rebel cause were organic-looking star cruisers.
After being made a commander, Ackbar helped develop the powerful two-pilot B-wing starfighter. After this he was promoted to Admiral by Mon Mothma. At the Battle of Endor, Ackbar called for a tactical withdrawal, but after becoming convinced that the Rebles could succeed, he committed all the forces at his disposal for one of the bloodiest battles of the Rebellion. In the end, the Rebels destroyed the second Death Star.
When the New Republic later faced an attack led by Grand Admiral Thrawn, Ackbar faced a personal crisis. On the home front, Ackbar had been named a member of the Provisional Council and the ruling Inner Council of the New Republic. Here he frequently clashed with Borsk Fey'lya, a Bothan leader. Ackbar was arrested on charges of embezzlement. It turned out it was false "evidence" planted by Thrawn. Ackbar was cleared in time to lead the New Republic fleet to victory over Thrawn's forces in the battle at the Bilbringi Shipyard.
After Thrawn's defeat survivors of the Emperor's ruling circle and six fleet commanders attacked and recaptured Coruscant. This sent the New Republic fleeing to the fifth moon of Da Soocha where Ackbar and others planned how the battle Emperor Palpatine's clone. After a months on Nespis VIII, New Republic forces regained Crouscant.
On a diplomatic mission to the windy planet Vortex with Princess Leia, Ackbar crashed his B-wing fighter into the planet's greatest artist treasure killing many Vors. Later it was discovered that the commander's trusted chief mechanic had been turned into an Imperial operative and had sabotaged the ship. Before being cleared of the charges Ackbar had to fend off an atttack by Admiral Daala on the Mon Calamari.
After returning to Coruscant and reassuming his role in the New Republic he asked Winter (Leia's aide) to join him on a trip to Vortex for a ceremony marking of rebuilding what was destroyed and the two developed a close relationship.
