Drum Sergeant Ron Johns

The Handsome Ron
Ron is the new Drum Sergeant for the Ringwood Pipe Band having joined us from Swansea

LATEST

Ron has been chosen as "Lead Tip" for "The Scottish Tattoo at The Royal Albert Hall." Congratulations Ron!

Here is Ron's own story

I started playing drums in a local carnival jazz band in 1977. I was playing the bass drum. A friend asked me if I would be interested in joining the City of Swansea Pipe Band as a snare/side drummer.I decided to have a try and have been addicted to pipe bands ever since. I stayed with the band until 1985 before leaving owing to family and work commitments.

I rejoined in 1991 and was appointed Drum Sergeant. In recent years the Swansea band numbers have fallen and engagements decreased.

I was invited to appear as a guest drummer for Ringwood PB and gladly accepted. I soon decided to join the band and very quickly was offered the position of Leading Drummer/Drum Sergeant. I am proud of this early recognition and am doing all I can to justify their confidence in me.

Learning & Teaching

For the last 7 years, I have attended the RSPBA Summer school in Glasgow. It is an excellent course and hard work. I have learnt much and played with such bands as Boghall & Bathgate, 100 Pipers Whisky & Scottish Power. Each week I travel from Swansea to Wimborne (Dorset), where Ringwood PB practice, and put my learning into teaching practice with the drummers. Steady progress is being made so watch out at future competitions!

Ambition Fulfilled!

By joining Ringwood I am already going to realise one of my ambitions. This is to play in The Royal Albert Hall, on Sunday 18 April 1999, at "The Scottish Tattoo at The Royal Albert Hall"
This will be my biggest ever venue - England's premier venue - but you never know what the future may hold so hopefully not the biggest I will ever do! Page updated 22 December 1998. Ian McLennan
