New Radicals
Maybe you've been brainwashed too
With a counter-cultural moniker, paranoid album title and cryptically titled songs such as "Crying Like A Church On Monday" and "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You," you might think the New Radicals are a one-band revolution of sorts. Hardly. Instead, think Anglofied soul pop a la World Party, Style Council, and the Rolling Stones whenever Mick Jagger does his Motown/falsetto shtick. Sure, there's a swagger to this highly produced, big-pop effort--on the buoyant, piano-riffy hit single "You Get What You Give," lead Radical Gregg Alexander tells Courtney Love, Beck, and Marilyn Manson that they're fakes and that he's gonna kick their asses--and no doubt Brainwashed is often electrifying pop that rises above the generic. But really, with several squishably soft power-ballad moments and Alexander's dope fashion sense, the New Radicals just might have more in common with the Backstreet Boys than the Beastie Boys. Just with a greater amount of musical invention, cultural references, and a few cuss words.
