Note the ensign at the helm of the science vessel at Genesis (it's the Asian-looking woman). Later, when the Excelsior is chasing the Enterprise in spacedock, the SAME ensign is on the bridge of the Excelsior. However, she is back on the science vessel when the Klingons blow it up.
