Interplay in Trouble with Box Art
from PC Gamer 2-23-98 **
The cover of Interplay's new adventure game Of Light And Darkness depicts a naked angel woman curled up in the fetal position -- and some retailers won't stock the game because of it, Interplay says."I find it hard to comprehend that retailers could stock a game such as 'Tomb Raider and then claim our box is too provocative,'' says Kim Motika, Interplay's vice president of sales. "If these game environments were paintings, they would sell from $10 to 50 thousand in the fine art market.''
The image, shown below, was painted by Gil Bruvel, a respected working artist who created the art for the game.
Now is this censorship?? should a store have the right to say "no!! i don't want that in my shop" ?? well i guess my answer to both those questions is YES !!i do think it is censorship. i personally find nothing distasteful, disturbing or pornographic about this picture. I really don't see what the problem is.... who is anyone to say that Michaelangelo's "David" is "acceptable" art and this isn't?? all i am saying is give me the chance to SEE the art work on display. in the end, the public will choose for themselves.
Now on the other hand i do feel a store has the right to choose what merchandise they want to carry. But by the stores refusing to sell the game solely because of the cover art and NOT the content of the game, i do feel this becomes censorship cloaked in merchandising freedom ( is there really such a term as that ?? ah well ). The article implies that if Interplay will change the cover art then the offended stores would carry the game.
Now maybe i am missing something here, wouldn't be the first time :) and i know this isn't really all that big of deal. what can i say...i love a good debate :) so what do u think ... Is this censorship? or is it merely a store exercising it's merchandising freedom?? hope to hear from u soon. ~ Tender Fury
