Let me say right up front that this section was made early on. Blizzard has since made an extensive Tech Support section for Starcraft and Broodwar so if you're having problems not listed here or these solutions do not work for you, please check out their website. Note: Don't use the search feature for tech support, it doesn't work worth a flip. Instead, use the Solution Index link you'll see listed.

Errors When Installing
Some systems are having problems with the installer for Starcraft and Broodwar. The fixes listed below are for PC systems only. For MAC errors please see Blizzards Support Section at thier website.

Error 21: The Device is not ready - PC Only

Starcraft - Download and run Blizzards SC Installer Fix (InstFix.exe) with the Starcraft CD in your CD-ROM Drive

Broodwar - Download and run Blizzards BW Installer Fix (BwIFix.exe) with the Broodwar CD in your CD-ROM Drive

Error 5 when installing - PC Only

From Blizzard - If you see this error message push the alt-ctr-del keys at the same time and endtask on the StarCraft Brood War installer. You should now be able to run StarCraft Brood War by clicking on StarCraft Brood War link in your start menu. However, the splash / autorun screen will not work to run Brood War.

Battlenet Unable to Properly Identify/Detect Your Application Version
Uninstall and reinstall the game. Complete instructions on how to do this can be found here. Doing a scandisk and defrag before you re-install the game is also recommended.

Can't Download the StarCraft / Brood War Patches from Battle.net?
No problem, download them here. Put the patch in your Starcraft directory and then just double click to run it.

PC & MAC Patches - Click the link below and choose the MAC or PC directory.

Starcraft - Use this patch if you DO NOT have Broodwar installed.
Brood War - Use this patch if you have Broodwar installed.

Sound Card Problems ?
On some systems (Dell Optiplex Pentium Pro and possibly others) running Windows NT 4.0 there is a sound card hard lock while playing music. If you experience this, start the game, shut off music (use CTRL-M or the in-game menus), exit and restart. Playing without music should work around the problem for now.

If the above is not your system and you are having Sound Card problems, please update your drivers to the latest version. This usually takes care of the problem. If you are still having problems after updating your drivers, please check Blizzards Tech Support site for other known issues with various brands of sound cards.

How to properly clean a CD :
Use a clean, soft cloth and wipe from the center of the disc to the outer edge of the disc. Do NOT wipe the disc in a circular motion or use solvents (this can damage your disc). Do Not remove labels or anything else from the label side of your disc. Believe it or not, the adhesive is strong enough to remove the foil where the data is encoded.

Microsoft-compatible Mouse
Double-speed CD-ROM
