Windows 98/Battle.net Fix

This is taken from a post on SC.Org. The downloadable battle.net reg file is taken from SC Legacy. This was done because combining the two posts really was the best way to put this up . Thanks to Slev, Brent Carpenter, Vaccine, Indigo and Evileye for all the info.

Brent Carpenter sent over a possible fix for the win98/starcraft problems that he found while searching the battle.net forums. You can read it right here. I can't guarantee that it will work because I don't have Windows 98, but Brent said it worked for him.

OK there are two things you need to do.

  1. Delete the File BNCACHE.Dat - It will not hurt anything if you delete this and you will get a new one when you connect to B-Net
  2. Download this file Save it as Battlenet.reg and Save it in your Starcraft Folder.
(You made need to hold the shift button down and click to save. If this doesn't work u can download a zipped version of the file here.

Double click the Battlenet.reg file.
It should say Registry has been successfully installed or something similar to that
After that you should be able to connect to battle.net

If you want an explanation for the bug, here's one. This was also posted at SC.Org by Indigo the same day.

Vaccine sent in this great email about why battle.net seems to not work with with win98 in some cases:

If you install starcarft into win 95 then upgrade to win 98 it works fine on battle.net but if you do a fresh install of win98 (FORMAT C:) then install starcraft it wont let you get on battle net..wanna know why?? well here it is..THE SECURITY FOR THE WIN98 REGESTRY HAS BEEN CHANGED!!!! It really is working right..Battle net wont let you connect without reading certin REGISTRY strings. , Because you upgraded from 95 to 98 the regestry string for that game is still in the same old location(string). But when you do a fresh install of battle net on a fresh install of win98 the string is moved!!..Get it?? WIN98 wont let battle.net read THAT STRING!!!!

The strings that can't be read by battle.net client software are the ones containing the IP#s of the servers necessary for connection as well as other settings necessary to connect to battle.net... without these settings the battle.net client software is unable to connect to the battle.net servers.

Please do NOT email me about this fix. If it doesn't work for you,
then email Blizzard at support@blizzard.com Thanks, Tender Fury
