History of Student Congress

Surprisingly, Student Congress is one of the oldest events sponsored by the National Forensic League. The first Nation Congress was held in 1938 in Wooster, Ohio. The National Congress was suspended from 1944-1951, when the National Association of Secondary School Principals (overseer of every school related activity) placed a ban on competitve student conventions. Although it was reinstated, a much more serious blow would come would come at the National Tournament held at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. The Congress was a disaster, and many coaches complained. The National Council even considered ending Congress as a national event.
