The
Sickness [Disturbed] A collection of hardcore-thrash-rap-industrial-metal, The
Sickness showcases an array of songs characterized by pounding guitar riffs and
rap/scat/scream vocals. The first single, Stupify has been around long enough to
warrant actual requests from both MTV and Channel V. The songs have catchy lyrics (though
difficult to follow because of the speed) that may seem like tongue twisters with rapid
syllable pacing. Guitars are not too heavy and also exhibit harmonics and effects. The
songs may be described as "mellow enough" for listeners with open minds and yet
heavy enough to cater to most metalheads.
The Sickness, however, is more than mere
metal stylings. The album would noticeably embrace a theme that shows social awareness.
Songs such as Down with the Sickness, Voices and The Meaning of Life
explore certain aspects of modern society that seem to be symptomic of a much larger
social cancer.
Oh yeah, the album also has Disturb's own take of
Tears for Fears's Shout (listed as Shout 2000).
The Sickness may be too heavy for a lot of
folks but it is definitely one great album with great lyrics and vocals and guitar riffs.
The CD is out for PhP 450.00

Acoustica [Wolfgang] A recording of Wolfgang's 30 Sept 2000 concert,
"Silenced," Acoustica provides an hour of purely acoustic Wolfgang music. Though
it reeks of Metallica's S&M, Wolfgang still manages to surpass the obvious comparisons
and pull off this stunt. Wolfgang strays from its usual dark and electrically charged
performances and does with a purely acoustic set with the help of other musicians. The
image may remind you of Metallica but the music is definitely Wolfgang.
The musical line-up includes, of course, Wolfgang
with Basti Artadi (vocals), Manuel Legarda (6 and 12 string acoustic guitars), Mon
Legaspi (6 string bass), Wolf Gemora (drums and djembe) and David Aguirre (second acoustic
guitar), Paul Zialcita (percussions), Martin Jamora (keyboards), Rhada Cuadrado (second
vocals) and the UP Singing Ambassadors (choir).
A VCD version is also available.

The
Radioactive Sago Project [Radioactive Sago Project]
A fusion of hardcore rock, jazz and whatever is out
there, the Radioactive Sago Project stands out from the local rock scene with songs or
poems set to music, in which the band fuses various elements that blend into their unique
sound. Lourd de Veyra's vocals resonates as he reads or sings or whatever he does when
they perform. He has a cool yet soulful voice that personifies the common tao aware
of what is going on around him and still be able to deliver the all too-familiar and
popular growl/scream vocals in today's popular rock bands. Their songs exhibit social and
political awareness from the self-deprecating (and not to mention critical of the whole of
Philippine society) Gusto Ko ng Baboy to the spine-tingling Love ka ni S...
which points a finger at the Philippines's powerful elite. Tunes such as Black
Smoke Blues, Tungkol sa Wala and Caffeine Jolt Jazz have the more distinct
jazz influence while Pudong vs. Pablo and Sistema are more
characteristic of the now popular rap-trash-metal genre. The Radioactive
Sago Project shows versatiliy and uniqueness in style that certainly distinguishes them
from the scene charactarized by rip-offs and wannabes. They even have their version of the
Andrew E. song Humanap Ka ng Panget. Band line-up: Lourd de Veyra (vocals),
Francis de Veyra (bass), EJ Delgado (guitar), Jay Gapasin (drums), Arwin Nava
(percussion), Pards Tupas (trombone), Rastem Eugenio (saxophone), Wowie Anzano (trumpet).
The CD is available now for Php 400.00. |
