He's 38 years old and it's 6 years he's Fox Mulder, the male FBI agent in The X Files. And he says this could be his last year in the series.
Q: Is it true that you're leaving The X Files?
A: My contract finishes this year. This means I'm managing like if this's my last year, which it doesn't bother me. I don't like to say "never" but, for the moment, I don't know.
Q: It's been more than a year since the production crew moved to LA. How was the change?
A: Much easier and comfortable in terms of everyday life. I could live in my house, with my wife -Tea Leoni- who became pregnant, which probably wouldn't have happened if I was in Vancoucer...
Q: What about work?
A: It was more difficult doing The X Files in LA, because the locations are so far away...
Q: If this IS your last year, what plans do you have for your future?
A: I wanna write and direct. I wanna try new things.
Q: Did you like directing "The Unnatural"?
A: I was so nervous. A month before starting, I was thinking "I can't do this. I quit." I thought you had to give all your plans at the same time. When we really started, I discovered you do one thing at the time.
Q: Are you thinking in writing or directing one of the 22 episodes left?
A: Well, writing'd depend on the fact if I have good ideas or not. I have some, and if they turn out all right, I may try to direct them.
Q: Some fans seem to be obsessed with a relationship between your character, Mulder, and Gillian's, Scully. Some romance wouldn't be that bad...
A: NO, I believe it wouldn't be so bad.
Q: What do you think of the series?
A: It's an excellent show. (Yes, it is) Of course there was some bad episodes, there's always the bad ones. We run out of ideas, the fans get bored (ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!), and we're getting old. (You are not old. You're really cute.) But it was great to reach the sixth year.
Q: Have you thinked about the very end?
A: I don't believe we have to blow up everything or discover everythin was a dream. I suppose the seventh year's end will remain as open as ever...
Q: So you don't think you two will fall in love and hug at the end?
A: I don't know. You don't have a huge plan about the tv series, you do them while you're at it.
Q: Gillian Anderson has a contract for another year. If the series goes on, is she obliged to go on?
A: Yes.
Q: Do you imagine the series with Fox Mulder?
A: I could. If I was indispensable once, now I'm not. Nobody is indispensable. I would be an idiot if I say "God, they can't go on without me"
Q: The series has 8 Emmy nominations, half the last year's. What do you think?
A: If it is like that, I'm angry! -laughs- I'm not DYING for getting an Emmy. I take part of the voting, so I know it's done, and I know it's pretty imperfect, bad. But I'm proud of what we do.
Q: Did you learn something about Mulder after all this years?
A: Sure. Every actor learns something about himslef with their characters.
Q: For example?
A: -laughs- It's dificult to explain. It's at the same time something very near and very far away from me. People think I'm Mulder, and that's terrible. When I'm asked this kind of things, I try to take a distance from my character. It's a tough job, that I enjoy, so I think a lot about Mulder, and feel things about him.
Q: If you don't go on with the TV, would you still do The X Files second movie?
A: Yes, I believe the character belongs to me (It does, hon). When I said that the series could go on without me, I was saying the truth (AFML: no comments...) but i wouldn't like to. There would be a part from me that'd whish it's fail...
Q: Why?
A: Because I feel it's mine, I made him, that's why I wanna take care of Mulder. I want to behave well with my character, which I've been living with for six years, and I've also contributed to it's creation. That's why I wanna do the movie: I wanna be at the set and make sure they'd take good care of Mulder.
