The three new starting pokemon are totodile,cyndaquil,and chikorita.Totodile is a very strong pokemon and I reccomend him.Cyndaquil is probably the best coice,because the second gym leader uses a level 16 syther which is a tough fight.Chicorita isn't a good choice because the first gym uses bird pokemon and the second uses bug which both weaken this docile pokemon.
In gold and silver versions there are two additional legendary pokemon.Lugia a psychic/flying type can learn tons of powerfull attacks.
Ho-oh is a fire/flying pokemon It's equally as powerfull as lugia.
