This was required text for Themes in American Literature class at the University of South Carolina (ENGL 285). It was the first book that we read that semester, and it was my favourite. Originally, I didn't think that I would like the book, because a lot of people I know don't like Hawthorne's writing style. This is the only Hawthorne book that I read, and I quite enjoyed it. The book focuses on a group of people who try create a utopian society. The narrator, Miles Coverdale, finds that the difficulty in this is that certain people have a tendency to want to dominate others. The book is excellent! If you really want to think, I recommend that you read it. I wrote my term paper on the book, if you're interested in reading that first. Otherwise, please return to my media page or go home to DREAM. |
