When I was thirteen years old, my english teacher left for four months, and my class had a substitute. The substitute didn't want to cover Greek mythology, like was in the syllabus. Instead, she had us read "The Outsiders".
Of course, I didn't like it at first. I'm talking about before I even opened the book. I hated reading books for class, and I didn't like reading. But I read the book and loved it. S. E. Hinton is a talented woman. Did you know that she was only seventeen when she wrote it? I've seen the movie too, but the book is superior to it. |
The book is about a group of poor kids in a gang (the greasers) who are up against a rich group of kids (the soc, as in the socials). It's a beautiful book about accepting people from different backgrounds and not buying into stereotypes. It's also about friendship and dealing with death. If you haven't read it, you should.
S. E. Hinton has written four other books: "That was then, this is now", "Rumble Fish", "Taming the Star Runner", and "Tex". I've read all five of her books, and "The Outsiders" is my favourite. Her writing style has influenced my own. I've been trying to write like her since I was in eighth grade.
Now that you've heard about the book, go read it! You can also return to my media page or go home to DREAM.
