MEMORIAL DAY RECIPES

Memorial Day in the USA is celebrated on the last Sunday in May each year. We honor people who have served previously or presently are serving in the military on this patriotic holiday, many of whom gave their limbs or lives so that we might continue to enjoy freedom. This is also the official beginning of grilling season for the warmer months. Even if you live alone and cannot grill outdoors, you can still enjoy a grilled steak on an indoors electric grill, cook a baked potato in your microwave, and make a diced tropical fruit salad with iced tea and yeast rolls. If you have an American Flag, fly it on patriotic holidays to let Veterans know you still care about them and appreciate what they have done for our country.

GRILLED SIRLOIN STEAK
Buy a box of 4 Schwan's Sirloin Steaks and remove the packaging from how many steaks you intend to grill. Get your grill hot before you place them on it. Sprinkle your steak with garlic powder and onion powder on both sides, how much you use of both depends upon your own taste preferences. Grill the steak on both sides for 8 minutes each, then turn over and grill for another 7 minutes on each side for a well done steak. Cooking time will be less if you like it medium or even less if you like it rare. Cut through the center to make sure your steak is as done as you want it to be before turning off your grill. Turn off and unplug your grill from the electrical outlet and place some wet paper towels over the grill area, and close it, so that when it comes time to clean it, the grill will not be hard to clean at all. Serve cooked steaks with A-1 Sauce.

BAKED POTATOES
Kroger sells packages of 4 Baking Potatoes. Open the package and wash as many potatoes as you need. Wrap each washed Potato in a white paper towel or plastic wrap. Microwave it on high for 7 minutes. Slice it in half down the center lengthwise, and add butter, salt, and pepper to it. Serve.

TROPICAL FRUIT SALAD
Purchase Dole Diced Tropical Fruit 4 oz. cups that come 4 to a package. Keep them chilled in your refrigerator. They contain papaya and pineapple and will help to digest the protein. When serving them, drain two of them and add the fruit to a small dessert bowl. Mix in a small container of any yogurt that you really enjoy for the dressing. Serve chilled.

ICED TEA
At Kroger, look for their brand of Instant Iced Tea Sticks and purchase a box of 10. Purchase 3 boxes to have 30 sticks for 30 dinner meals for one person. Use one stick per bottle of chilled water. Put the cap back on the bottle after you add the tea stick to it, and shake to mix well. Pour the contents into a glass of ice cubes, and enjoy your iced tea. In some cases, the tea sticks can become hardened, but you can still use them. Just let them dissolve in hot water, then let them chill in your refrigerator.

YEAST ROLLS
Purchase a bag of frozen dinner rolls that are about the size of a quarter, then take the time to put each one into 3 butter sprayed muffin tins of 12 cups each, to let all 36 of them rise for at least a couple hours in a pre-warmed oven now turned off but with the light on in it. When they are risen to the size of normal rolls, bake them at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes until lightly golden browned, then spray the tops of each one with more Kroger butter spray. Let them cool, then place them in gallon sized Hefty Freezer Bags to have as needed with your meals. To reheat, place one or two rolls, per person eating, in your microwave for a minute. Serve hot with butter.

For a cool and refreshing dessert later, enjoy some chilled and sliced seedless watermelon sprinkled with sea salt and eaten with a fork.
