The girl had been here for a few hours. Her eyes appeared as shards of broken glass. Her body still racked with sobs, but no tears fell from her blank, emotionless eyes. The only motions she made were slow blinks and gentle breathing. Thoughts of death continued to repeat themselves in her mind. Her throat was parched from whispering the words “”goodbye” over and over again. I walked up to her. She could only see my shoes, but I knew that’ she knew who I was. Her eyes moved upwards and her head moved so she could see my face. Her eyes began to fill with tears and her mouth formed into an O of surprise. She didn’t expect to see me. I bent down and picked her up, holding her close to my chest. She tired to speak, but I just put my finger over her mouth and whispered that it would be okay. I carried her until we reached the outside of the garage. I then carefully set her on her feet. She was no longer crying, but looked puzzled.
“Wh-where did you come from?? How did you get out of the attic??” She asked me with a strained voice.
“Attic?? I was never in the attic. I’ve been searching for you for a couple of hours. I thought you might be here still so I came back. What happened to you??” I asked her, very concerned and worried.
“sh-she told me that you were in the attic. I tried to get to you, but things were thrown down at me,” she began with a very dazed look in her eyes. She began to sob again, but continued, “I thought I had lost you.”
I pet her head, trying to soothe her. I held her as close as I could so she would know that she was safe. I didn’t know what she had through, but I did not ask so I wouldn’t upset her more. I took her hand and we walked back to the building that we met at earlier that day. There was no one around.
“Remember how I told you earlier that I didn’t know why I came here??” She asked me as we sat on a bench outside the front door.
“yes,” I replied.
“well I still don’t know why, but perhaps it was destined to happen. Now I know how much more I need you than I ever thought,” she smiled as she said this.
I beamed with happiness and gave her a gentle kiss. It was nice to be able to touch her again. I was so worried earlier about her. I didn’t know if I was ever going to see her again. It tore me up inside, but those words pulled everything back together.
“Erick, perhaps we should go now. My car is still here.”
She pointed to an old, green mustang that was parked a few rows from us. I stood and then pulled her up to me. I hugged her again and then walked with her to the car. I took her keys from her because she looked too shaken to drive. She smiled and then ran her fingers through my short, blond hair. I opened the door for her. We get in, started up the car, and turned onto the highway. We smiled at each other, not knowing where we were going. We drove off on a shadowed highway that could take us anywhere, even if it wasn’’t where we wanted to go.Suddenly, the wheel turned on its own. The car began swerving out of control. She screamed in terror and gripped my arm tightly. My eyes became wide as we came closer to hitting evry tree as the car bounced down the hill. A huge tree loomed before us.
“We’re going to die,” she whispered.
I hugged her and we shut our eyes as we impacted with the tree.
