In black, at Bonnie's grave side. Alaric and Matt were on either side of her, each looking disenchanted and detached. Meredith was disenchanted herself, who wouldn't be. Her best friend, who never hurt anyone, was murdered by a nameless psycho. Of course, Meredith knew that evil had no rhyme or reason. On top of everything else, Elena has refused to come.
She knew in her head that it was best that Elena didn't come, she just wished that someone would explain it to her heart. The whole situation hurt her physically and mentally, people her age shouldn't have to watch her friends drop like flies and other friends not give a damn.
The minister finished his benediction and the small group slowly dispersed. Meredith walked to the flower arrangements and began to pick flowers from each. She planned to dry and frame them, she'd done the same at Elena's last funeral.
" Meredith, we should go." suggested Alaric
" In a minute."
She walked to Matt and put her arms around him. He held her back, but his movements were stiff and calculated. He stared at Bonnie's casket like he could bore holes in it.
" Matt, She's not Elena. She won't come back."
" I know." he replied cooly
" Do you really?"
Deep in the pit of her gut, Meredith wished Bonnie would be resurrected.
" Come on Matt, come back to our house. We can talk and talk some more. How about it?" asked Meredith
All he did was shrug, but that told her all she needed to know.
*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*-----*
Matt stood with his back resting on the doorframe of Meredith and Alaric's kitchen, cup of hot liquid in hand. He had stupidly agreed to go to their house, he didn't know why. He just wanted to be alone, alone with his thoughts and his whiskey. Maybe if Bonnie had been killed by some insane vampire, then maybe he could deal with it better.
" But, I don't think she was." announced Alaric
" I didn't realize I'd spoken outloud."
" Alaric, I don't think this is the right time." said Meredith
" Well, when would be a good time? How about after someone else we know is dead?"
"How about never!" Matt exploded " Why can't you two accept the fact that maybe Bonnie was killed by a human psycho!? Not every death is connected to a twice dead prom queen and her court of slobbering followers! Or is not interesting enough for you Dr. Saltzman?"
Matt threw his mug against the kitchen wall and stormed out of the house. His chest burned and his eyes were watering with tears. Thoughts of the two he just left swam in his mind. He wanted to punch Alaric and shake Meredith. Hadn't they been through enough?
Matt jumped in his car and threw it in gear, tires squealed and he drove. He didn't know what his destination was, he didn't care. Any place that was away from those two self-absorbed idiots. Matt stopped at his apartment to get his bottle of Jack Daniels, a new staple of his diet. It easied his pain.
Just as he stepped into the yard of his complex, he felt a shift in the air. Matt looked at the sky, which had gone black suddenly and the wind blew with a strong force. It was the first time he'd noticed the weather. The day started out sort of cloudy, but now it looked like a fog was flowing on the ground. Something whispered danger to Matt's brain, at the same time telling him to run. Matt abandoned his bottle, letting it crash next to his leg. He dove into his car and sped out of the parking lot. He squealed onto Old Creek Road and turned right. He didn't could see what was chasing him, but he could feel his fear pounding in his chest.
He drove faster and faster until everything was a blur. Only until he saw the ruined tower of the old church did he realize where he was being chased to. His fear clenched his heart and squeezed. Suddenly, Matt's whole vision were filled with one image, the river.
