Goals of the Grammar Stage
Latin after phonics? Yes! Read the article by Cheryl Lowe at
the Memoria Press Website to learn
why it is logical to follow phonics with Latin. English grammar is
much easier to teach using a structured language such as Latin. Another
benefit to the study of Latin during the grammar stage is the vocabulary
that students will aquire. Approximately 80% of all English words come from
other languages (mainly Latin and Greek) with nearly 60% being of Latin origin.
It has been proven that the study of Latin (or even just Latin roots) can improve
verbal SAT scores. Why should we do this during the grammar stage? Because that
is the time to learn grammar! (*I will be adding more to this page, as well as all
the others as soon as time allows.)
