Principles of Pre-Primary Education According to Maria Montessori
During the pre-primary years the student should be exposed
to lots of learning experiences in preparation for later
academics. This is the time to awaken a phonological awareness
as well as an awareness of numbers and quantity. No formal
academics are recommended, but lots of activities are.
Specific Recommendations for 4 to 6 year olds:
Continue with the recommendations for toddlers. Memorization of
basic prayers will be easy with daily repetition. Two books will
be helpful with religious formation for the preschool and kindergarten
student. Both are available from OLVS.
"Leading Little Ones to Mary" and "Chats With God's Little Ones"
A picture Bible, such as the Catholic Children's Picture Bible (available from OLVS)

An introduction to various forms of literature
including Fables is highly recommended for the Kindergarten and first grade student.
The Primer level of the Catholic National Readers(available from OLVS) is recommended for the 5 or 6 year old beginning reader.
Reading instruction using phonics can begin anywhere from 3 to 7 years of age,
depending on the child's readiness. Recommended resources for phonics:

or
Little Angel Readers
Sound Start Phonics and the Little Angel Readers programs can
be used with preschoolers and kindergarteners. Professor Phonics is recommended
for beginners of 6 or 7 years old. The Little Angel Readers (alone - w/o teacher materials) can also
be used with any program for reading practice with Catholic stories.
No formal math or language program is necessary for children under 7. For help putting together your
own math activities for this age, read An Easy Start in Arithmetic by Ruth Beechick. SCSA plans
plans to add some helpful activities to our site in the future. A simple to use math option for the
Kindergartener is a program called Kindermath from Eagles Wings.
Miquon Math is highly recommended
beginning in Kindergarten or first grade.
