"I'm not sure what you mean," Hunter said, trying to look as innocent as possible.
Vince was not amused and it only seemed to anger him more. "Well let's see where to begin." Vince looked him over with a look that gave Hunter the chilling feeling that Vince could see right through him. "Let's start with the way your dressed."
"What's wrong with the way I'm dressed?" Hunter asked defensively. He thought he had dressed rather conservatively, for him.
"Nothing if your a beach boy. Shane your a representative of a billion dollar company the image you give off reflects on this company," Vince said it as if he had told Shane the same line thousands of times before. "And speaking of this company, how about the business meetings you didn't bother to show up for?" Vince couldn't wait to hear Shane's attempt at an excuse. As far as he was concerned there was no excusing his behavior.
"I forgot," Hunter said simply.
"You forgot?" Vince was clearly incensed at that remark.
"Yeah ain't I allowed to forget dad?" Hunter said the word dad like it was a swear word, spitting it out at Vince.
"No not when it comes to MY company you're not." What had gotten into Shane? His behavior was inexcusable. "Weren't you embarrassed enough last night with that whole depantsing business?"
Hunter tried hard not to laugh as he remembered it, tried but failed.
Vince shook his head, "Yeah real funny wasn't it. You know, it's bad enough I have to be embarrassed by that degenerate your sister married. Don't start acting that way too."
Hunter began to realize why Shane was always so serious; he wasn't allowed to have fun. To Vince everything was about business, even family. He almost felt sorry for Shane, almost. He decided to take advantage of the situation. "Why do you hate Hunter so much?"
Vince looked at Hunter like he had three heads. Like his son really had to ask him that? "Same reason you do Shane. He's irresponsible, he never takes anything seriously, he's immature, he's using your sister to get to me... do I need to go on?"
Hunter thought he had heard enough. "No."
"Don't worry about Hunter. Just worry about your job, because right now you need to worry about keeping it." Vince left, slamming the door behind him.
Hunter was not happy, in fact he was irate. Who did Vince think he was, yelling at him like that? Hunter walked out of his office, slamming the door behind him and stomped over to Maggie's desk. "Why didn't you tell me he was here?"
"I guess I forgot," she said trying to make a point, but the point was clearly lost on Hunter.
Hunter was furious. He started to stomp back to his office, put his hand on the door to open it when he turned around. "Oh I forgot too. You're fired!" He slammed the door to his office leaving Maggie there stunned.
Linda McMahon answered the door herself and was surprised at how handsome Hunter looked. He usually showed up in jeans and a leather jacket, but today he was in a nice suit. Linda didn't even think he owned a suit. "Come in, come in," Linda said graciously.
"Thank you," Shane said, helping Stephanie off with her coat. Linda went to take the coats from him. "Oh no, let me," he smiled and took them to the hall closet
Stephanie was pleasantly surprised that Hunter was behaving so well. Maybe he had taken what she had said to heart and was finally trying to get along with her family. Stephanie followed Linda into the dining room.
Vince was there, but Linda was surprised to see that Shane was missing. He was usually so prompt. Come to think of it, Linda hadn't heard from Shane all day. That just wasn't like him. She turned to Stephanie. "Where's your brother at?"
Stephanie shrugged her shoulders. She hadn't heard from Shane. In fact he was supposed to meet her for lunch but hadn't shown up and hadn't called. She was still a little upset about that. "I have no idea." Linda walked over to the base of the stairs. "Shane?" she called out.
Hunter tromped down the stairs loudly, skipping every other step. When he came into the dining room he was wearing just jeans and a T-shirt. But in his defense it was a clean T-shirt.
Vince was clearly not happy. He had had enough of his son's uncouth behavior. "Don't you know how to dress for dinner either?"
"Vince, please!" Linda pleaded, knowing where this was leading. For once they were going to have a peaceful family dinner even if she had to force them all in line herself.
Vince sat quietly, biting his tongue, but he didn't look too happy at having to do so. Shane shifted uncomfortably in his chair. He knew his mother and sister had put a lot of effort into this evening and Hunter wasn't going to be satisfied until he ruined everything.
"So did anything interesting happen today?" Linda asked, trying to make polite conversation.
"Uh, I fired my secretary today," Hunter said without thinking.
"What?!" Vince and Shane said in unison.
Vince glared over at his son-in-law and looked at him strangely. Why should Hunter care if Shane's secretary was fired or not?
Shane realized that he had spoken out of turn, and what's more out of character. He turned his attention to his plate in front of him and started eating to take attention off him. Inside he was steaming. Maggie was the best most efficient personal assistant he had ever had and she had been with him for years. He couldn't believe Hunter had fired her. He knew one thing for sure; he was going to kill Hunter.
Vince turned his attention back to his son. "Now where are you gonna find another secretary in time for the meetings tomorrow?"
Hunter gave a grunt of disgust. He was beginning to realize that being Shane wasn't as much fun as he had first thought. Maybe the reason Shane was always all work was because Vince never allowed him to do anything else. It was beginning to be a real drag. "More meetings? How many do I have to go to?"
"How about none. Maybe you need a break from the company!" Vince glared at his son.
"Hold on now. He didn't mean it," Shane said trying to keep his job intact. "Like I care about your opinion!" Vince shouted at his son-in-law, pounding his fists on the table.
The fighting escalated from there with the two women helpless to do anything about it. Stephanie had hoped to have a nice family gathering so she could tell everybody her news, and things were not going as planned. Frustrated tears came to her eyes, and finally she couldn't take it anymore. She threw her napkin to the floor and stood up. "I'm pregnant."
Suddenly every one was silent and all eyes were on Stephanie. "What did you say dear?" Linda asked, not sure she had heard her right over all the noise
Stephanie sighed. This was definitely not how she had wanted to tell everyone, but it was too late to take it back. "I said Hunter and I are gonna have a baby."
Hunter fainted dead away.
````````````````````````````````````````
"Shane, Shane are you okay?"
Hunter was aware of voices around him as he slowly came to. Vince helped his son back into his chair.
"Wow I expected Hunter to be surprised, but not you," Stephanie smiled. And she most certainly hadn't expected her brother to faint at the news. But then again she had no expectations that he'd be happy about it either.
"Sorry about that. You're pregnant?" His eyes showed a happy excitement.
Her brother's attitude was catchy and Stephanie smiled at him. "Yes Shane"
"We're gonna have a baby?" the excitement clearly in Hunter's voice. He couldn't believe it; he was going to be a daddy.
"Well if by we you mean me and Hunter than yes. I hope you're ready to be an uncle." Stephanie had been wanting to tell everyone ever since she came back from the doctor's the day before, but then Shane and Hunter had gotten into yet another huge fight and ruined everything. She had wanted the dinner to be perfect, but she should have known better than to expect a single evening to go fight free. Still, she couldn't hide the excitement.
Hunter had forgotten he was still in Shane. This was perfect, just perfect. His wife was going to have a baby, and instead of being the father to his child he was going to be the uncle. He was never going to hear his little kid call him daddy, never going to be able to tell that child they had made their father proud. He was going to miss it, he was going to miss all of that. And Shane, the man that Hunter hated most of all at that moment, was going to be the father to his child. It was almost too much for him to bear. Hunter put his head in his hands, the previous excitement all gone. Linda handed him a cold washcloth for his head.
Stephanie looked nervously over at her husband. He hadn't said one word since she made her announcement. She had hoped he would be happy about this, as excited as she was, but it was clear by his face that he wasn't and that soured the moment for Stephanie. "Aren't you happy about this?"
Shane wasn't sure how to react really. In truth he wasn't happy about it at all. His sister and that degenerate were having a baby? He loved his sister so much and he wanted so much more for her, she could do so much better than Hunter. But having a baby sealed things. She and Hunter were no longer just a couple, they were a family. Shane looked over at Stephanie, she looked so worried. He forced a smile and reached over to take her hand. "Yeah, of course I'm happy."
She sighed and smiled. "Then let's go home and celebrate," she whispered to him.
Oh no. Not again. How was he going to get out of this? He thought fast. "In your condition? We can't. You need lots of rest. So Ill take you home so you can sleep and then I'll go tell the guys. They are going to be so thrilled!" Shane was just thrilled at the thought of getting out of there for the night. But how was he gonna keep this up?
As Hunter walked in he noticed Maggie at her desk. "What are you still doing here?"
"Cleaning out my desk. Do you have a problem with that?" she shot back sharply.
Hunter just shrugged his shoulders. He didn't feel like arguing with her. In fact he wasn't much in the mood to argue with anyone. He felt like he had been doing way too much of that lately and it had cost him. He ignored Maggie and went into his office, heading straight back to his private washroom. He splashed some cold water on his face, hoping to wake himself up from this nightmare that had become his life. He looked up at his face in the mirror, but it wasn't his face, it was Shane's face. He was growing so tired of looking at Shane's face in the mirror. He wanted things to be the way they were before. He wanted to be himself again. He needed to find a way out and fast.
`````````````````````````
Shane opened the door to his office. It was Hunter's office now, he had to remind himself. He saw Maggie packing her things up in a box. It was the first time he had seen her out of work clothes. She was usually so professionally dressed, skirt and blazer, her blond hair up in a bun. Today she was wearing a pair of jeans and a red sweater, her blond hair was loose. He had never realized how long it was. Funny, she had worked with him all these years and he had never really realized how pretty she was either. He had always seen her as just his personal assistant, but today for the first time he was seeing her as a person. He knew what he had to do, but he knew it was not going to be easy. He walked up to her. "Hey Maggie."
She turned her head slightly to look at him, but when she saw it was just Hunter she turned back to her packing. "You can go on in if you want, who am I to stop you?"
"I actually wanted to talk to you." He walked up to her till he was standing directly in front of her.
"I'm not really in the mood for DX gags today," she said, tucking a stray lock of blond hair behind her ear as she was putting the last of her things in the box.
"I wish this was a gag believe me."
Maggie looked at him not really knowing what to say. Hunter really never said more than two words to her before. She had no idea what he could want.
Shane could see that she didn't trust him, but he needed to talk to someone and he knew that Maggie would somehow understand. "I need to tell you something and its going to sound completely crazy but I swear it's the truth."
Maggie stopped her packing with a sigh and gave him her full attention. "Ok"
"I am Shane." Shane looked at her waiting for her reaction.
She stared at him for a moment, then grabbed a picture off of her desk and added it to the box. "Now why would that be hard to believe? Are you finished now 'cause I have to get this done."
"No Maggie, you're not listening to me. Really, I am Shane." He couldn't blame her for not believing him. Heck, he was still having a hard time believing it himself. Still he needed someone to believe him, someone to understand, someone to confide in and Maggie knew him better than anyone, even his family.
"Of course you are Shane. And I am really Chyna, but shhh! Don't tell anyone cause it's a secret." She reached for her purse, slinging it over her shoulder.
Shane tried to think of what he could do to prove it to her. "Ok ask me something only Shane would know."
"I'm not in the mood for this Hunter. Go play games with someone else." She picked up the box and started for the door.
"Just ask me please!" he called after her.
She turned back to look at him and she noticed something different about his expression. It was softer, and very familiar. She set the box down on a nearby table. "Fine. How many words do I type per minute?"
"95," Shane answered right away.
Maggie looked a little surprised he got it that quick. But maybe it was just a lucky guess. "Okay what grade did I get in shorthand?"
"You don't know shorthand," he answered quickly yet again.
Shane used to tease her about that but she always told him there was no need to take shorthand when she could type as fast as she could. So he had gotten two questions right. So what, that didn't prove anything. Did it? "Okay. Shane could've told you this stuff."
"You think so? Well then go ask him the same questions." Shane didn't know what else to do to make her believe him.
Maggie decided to play along out of curiosity. She knocked on the door.
"What?" Hunter yelled.
Maggie opened the door and stepped inside. "I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving now."
"Good," he said, not seeming to care.
"I don't know where you'll find a secretary who types 70 words per minute and takes shorthand as well as I do." She watched for his reaction
He didn't even blink. "I'm not worried about it."
Maggie closed the door. It was impossible, or was it? It was all making sense now. The way Shane was dressing and acting. "So that's.."
"Hunter," Shane nodded. He smiled for the first time all morning. She believed him, she actually believed him. It felt so good to be able to tell somebody.
"This is unbelievable." Maggie sat down on the nearest horizontal surface, which happened to be the edge of her desk.
Shane walked over to her and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I'm just sorry all this happened to you. When I get my body back your rehired."
"Well I for one hope you get your body back soon. I miss it." Shane looked at her kind of shocked. Maggie couldn't believe she had actually said it out loud. "I meant...Well this is really embarrassing. I think I'll go now." Maggie slid off the desk and went over to pick up her box.
Before she had gone more than a foot Shane grabbed her arm. She looked up at him and an awkward moment passed as their eyes locked. It was as ithey were seeing each other for the first time. Suddenly on impulse Shane leaned down and kissed her, surprising them both. Even more surprising was the fact that she kissed him back.
At that very moment Stephanie, who had wanted to talk to her brother, walked in the office. She had seen them, but they were so caught up in each other that they didn't see her. She quietly walked out of the room. Once outside the office she leaned back against the wall and tears started to fall. No wonder Hunter didn't want to come near her and no wonder he was so upset that Shane's assistant had been fired. He was having an affair. Shane had probably known all about it and that was why he had fired her. She couldn't believe that she had been so stupid to think that Hunter loved her. Who else had known about this little tryst? Was it common knowledge and was her ignorance of it making her the laughing stock of Titan. She had loved him, she still loved him, and she had been naive enough to think that he loved her back. How could she have been so blind and stupid?
"How long have you known?" she demanded
"Known what?" What on earth was she referring to? What was it he was supposed to know? He was confused but at the same time was glad she was there.
"You know what I'm talking about." Tears started to come to her eyes and he had to fight the urge to hold her in his arms and comfort her.
He was worried about her. She had been so stressed out lately and that couldn't be good for the baby. "Steph honey, don't you think you should be sitting down? Can I get something for you? Um pickles and ice cream?"
She stared at her brother like he had lost his head. "Are you patronizing me? What is wrong with you Shane? You seem to care more about this baby than Hunter does. I swear your acting like this baby is yours."
Hunter thought to himself how close she really was. He wished he could tell her the truth, he wished he could explain it to her. But how could he explain what was going on when he didn't understand it himself. "I'm sorry. I'm just worried about you that's all."
Well at least someone was worried about her and the baby, her husband sure wasn't. The moment Stephanie stared to think about Hunter again the image of him and Maggie kissing flashed through her mind and the tears began to flow freely. "I just want to know when you found about their affair."
"Who's affair?" She had lost him.
"My husband and your secretary!" Stephanie could barely get it out. It hurt so much to think about it, let alone talk about it. How could he? How could he do this to her?
Hunter looked shocked. What was she talking about? He had never cheated on her, the thought had never crossed his mind, not even when Bibi had made her little offer. And if he was going to cheat he most certainly wasn't going to do it with Maggie of all people. That woman knew how to push all his buttons. "I .. I mean Hunter is not cheating on you Stephanie, he loves you."
Stephanie snorted in disgust. The signs had been there she realized, she had just been too stupid to see them. "Oh yeah he loves me so much he won't come near me. And his loving me certainly explains why I found him with his tongue down Maggie's throat outside your office!"
"What?" Hunter was steaming. Shane had done all this on purpose. He was out to get him. Shane had been against his marriage all along and now he was purposely trying to break up their marriage. He was going to kill Shane. How dare he! How dare he ruin the best thing that had ever happened to him.
Stephanie looked at him in surprise. He genuinely seemed not to know. "You didn't know? I thought that's why you fired her?"
As angry as he was with Shane he could see how much Stephanie was hurting and it took every ounce of willpower not to take her in his arms and kiss her right there. He was going to take care of this, he was going to make everything all right, and he was going to kill Shane. "Look Steph, I know Hunter loves you. You've got to trust me on this. He would never betray you, never! There's probably a perfectly reasonable explanation for everything. Maybe Maggie was just coming on to him. Face it, he's a good-looking guy. Women are throwing themselves at him all the time, but he only has eyes for you."
Stephanie couldn't believe her brother. "You're defending him?"
Hunter had to think fast. "Yes I am," he said. "And I'm sorry I didn't sooner. I promise you, I'm going to get to the bottom of things and straighten everything out."
"Thank you Shane you're the best." Stephanie hugged him. Hunter held her, a little more tightly then Shane would, enjoying the feel of her in his arms. He just wished he could tell her everything.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maggie and Shane were sitting on a park bench just down the street from Titan Towers. It was one of Maggie's favorite places to think, she used to come there for lunch every day. Shane was talking about the possibilities for them if Shane and Hunter switched back. Maggie assured Shane that it was not a matter of if they switched back but when. Shane wondered why he had never realized what a wonderful person Maggie was before. He brushed back her blond hair and leaned in to kiss her, not once seeing DX approaching.
"What the hell do you think you're doing Hunter?!" Road Dogg exclaimed in shock.
What business was it of DX what he was doing? Who did they think they were? He didn't have to explain himself to them! After all, he was Shane McMahon! "None of your damn business. Get lost."
X-Pac looked at him in shock. Since when did Hunter treat them like that? And since when did Hunter fool around behind Stephanie's back. "Fine! Maybe we should go see if it's your wife's business."
Shane suddenly remembered he was Hunter. "No wait!" he called after them, trying to come up with a plausible explanation. "It's not what you think, really!"
Road Dogg just shook his head. "Look Hunter, you told us when you married Steph not to let you mess things like you always tended to do with relationships. You said you loved her, that she was the best thing that ever happened to you, that you didn't want to do anything to screw it up. Well you're doing it now, and we're just trying to help man."
Shane couldn't believe it. Hunter really did love his sister. All this time Shane had thought he was just using her, leading he on only to eventually hurt her, but he was wrong. Hunter genuinely loved her. "Your right." He turned to Maggie and mouthed the words I'll call you later. She understood. "I have to go. I love my wife."
"I understand." she smiled.
They didn't want to wait and see if this was going to be a messy goodbye, DX pulled Shane up. "Okay let's go Hunter."
Forcing a smile Hunter called out to Shane, "Oh Hunter, can I see you for a moment?"
"What does he want?" Billy asked Shane.
Shane just shrugged his shoulders. "I have no idea. Why don't you guys go on ahead and I'll catch up with you in a minute?"
Once they left Shane came over towards Hunter. He was a few feet away when Hunter reached out and grabbed him by the throat, lifting him off the ground.
Hunter squeezed his fingers around Shane's throat. "I know what your trying to do and it won't work."
Shane was able to break free from the grip and stood there rubbing his throat. "What are you talking about?" he asked hoarsely.
"You're trying to destroy my marriage!" Hunter couldn't believe that Shane had the nerve to stand there and act innocent.
"I am not!"
What a liar! Who did he think he was fooling? Hunter should have known that the first chance he had Shane would destroy his life and his marriage. It was what Shane had wanted all along. Shane didn't even seem to care if Stephanie got hurt in the process. "Then why are you making Steph think I'm cheating on her?"
Where would Hunter get a ludicrous idea like that? Like Shane didn't have better things to do? "Look, if I wanted to wreck your marriage I could but I don't want to."
Hunter wasn't buying one word of it. Shane was a McMahon and lying seemed to be in the bloodline, at least on the male side of the family. "Oh no? Then explain to me why your sister came to me in tears about Maggie and me."
Shane grew angry. How dare Hunter touch Maggie. He was a married man! "Maggie and you?"
"Well that's what she thinks. It seems she saw you two in a liplock."
Then Shane remembered. He put his head in his hand. He had really blown it. "Oh man."
"What are you doing picking up woman in my body anyway?"
Shane shook his head. How was he going to explain things? "No, it wasn't like that. I told Maggie about the switch. She knows you're me or I'm you or well you know what I mean."
"And she believed you?" Maybe he had underestimated Maggie. He had thought the woman was an annoying witch, but maybe she and Shane deserved each other.
"Yeah."
Hunter shook his head. This whole thing was a huge mess, a disaster waiting to happen. It had already cost him his marriage, or had it? Maybe it wasn't too late to fix things. "Well just stay away from her till we switch back.'
"No!" Shane wasn't about to do it. And who did Hunter think he was bossing him around like this?
"What?" Hunter growled in anger.
"I said no!" Shane wasn't intimidated, not by Hunter. "Look I don't know how this happened but I'm sure you're responsible. I want out."
The nerve of Shane! Where did he get off passing all the blame to him? Like he had anything to do with this? "I'm responsible? If anyone's responsible it's you and there is nothing I want more than out of this wimpy pathetic body of yours!"
Shane wasn't about to back down. Hunter was the cause of all this, just another elaborate prank by DX. "I think you wanted this all along. That way you could screw up my job and my life. And you wouldn't have to take responsibility for the baby."
Hunter lost his cool at that and punched Shane who retaliated back. They began brawling backstage, knocking over equipment and people. DX heard the noise and ran in, trying to separate them but Hunter and Shane kept going at it. They were intent on each other and didn't seem to notice anyone else was there. They didn't see Stephanie come in, they didn't hear her yelling to stop, and they most certainly didn't see her try to break things apart. If they had they would have stopped. They did stop, but not until they realized what had happened. They had knocked Stephanie down and she was lying on the ground between them, unconscious.
"She wants to see her husband," the nurse said. Everyone was quick to realize that she didn't give any details of Stephanie's condition and some of them assumed the worst.
Shane and Hunter looked at each other and Hunter sat down in a chair. He placed his head in his hands, defeated. He wanted to be with Stephanie, he needed to be with his wife, to make sure she and the baby were okay. He couldn't face the possibility that she may have lost the baby, their baby.
Shane saw the pain in Hunter's face and knew how much he wanted to be with Stephanie. Hunter should be the one to go in to her, not him. Shane didn't know what to do. He turned to the nurse, " Can her brother go in too?"
Hunter looked up, his face full of hope. Please say yes, he begged silently.
"I'm sorry Mr. Helmsley, but your wife asked that it just be you."
Shane looked over at Hunter, and briefly put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "I'll fix this," he promised.
Hunter nodded and watched as Shane walked away. Please let them be all right, he said in quite prayer.
Shane hesitated a moment before walking into Stephanie's room. She looked so pale and worn out lying in that bed. Dark circles were under her eyes. It was the first time he had seen her like that. She was always so happy and so upbeat. "Hey, how are you?" he asked with a smile as he sat down next to her bed.
Stephanie smiled up at her husband, a tired smile. "I thought you should know first. I'm fine, and the baby, the baby is fine too."
Shane's eyes filled up with tears at that news. But this wasn't right. Hunter should be here, sharing this moment with her, not outside, wondering if his wife and baby were okay.
Stephanie saw Shane's reaction, and carefully searched his face, trying to read his expression. "You do care, don't you?" She wasn't so sure that he did, wasn't sure he even wanted the baby, or her, in the first place.
Shane nodded his head and sighed. "Steph, I think it's time I told you something."
`````````````````````````````
Hunter sat out in the waiting room his only thoughts were of his wife and the baby. He couldn't bare it if she lost the baby because of him. How could he possibly live with himself?
"Well I hope you're happy." Vince said.
Linda tried to quiet him, but Vince wasn't done.
Hunter looked up at him
"See what your immaturity has gotten you into this time?"
Vince's words were like a slap in the face. How could Shane stand to be pushed around like this? To be treated this way by his own father? It was at that moment that Hunter realized that Shane didn't deserve to be treated the way he and DX had been treating him. He had a hard enough time dealing with Vince, living up to Vince's image. "Listen here. Your son gives 150% to you and this company all the time. I think it royally sucks that you can't appreciate that. So he's not perfect. He's still your kid. Maybe you should appreciate that instead!"
Vince stared at his son in shock. He had never spoken that way to him before. "Since when did you start talking in 3rd person?" Maybe he'd been spending a little too much time with The Rock
``````````````````````````
"Oh my God, I can't believe this!" Stephanie said as Shane finished his explanation. But it did explain certain things, actually a lot of things.
"I know it's hard to believe. Maggie didn't believe it too well at first either."
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked, a little hurt to have been shut out like that.
"At first I didn't think you'd believe me. But Hunter really loves you. I've been finding that out over the last few days. I guess he's not that bad." It took a lot for Shane to admit it, but it was the truth, a truth he had had to discover the hard way.
"Will you get him for me?" Stephanie wanted to be with her husband, her real husband.
"Sure," Shane smiled.
Hunter jumped out of his seat and practically ran to Stephanie's room, Shane stopped him just outside the door.
"I explained everything, Maggie, the switch, everything. And Hunter, I didn't try to mess things up on purpose, I'm sorry."
Hunter realized that was probably the first time he had every heard Shane apologize, for anything. "I'm sorry too. Can we just put this all in the past?"
Shane nodded; there was nothing he'd like more. Together they walked into the room and Hunter immediately rushed to Stephanie's side.
He was almost afraid to ask the question, but he needed to know. "The baby?"
"Is fine," she smiled, taking his hand.
"Thank God!" Hunter felt as though a huge weight had been lifted from him. "I am so sorry Stephanie..." he trailed off. There just weren't enough words to explain what he wanted to say to her.
"It's okay," she said softly.
Shane's body or not, Hunter didn't care anymore. He leaned down to embrace his wife and as he did something happened.
Shane had the sudden realization that he was hugging his sister. He quickly pulled away and turned to see Hunter standing where he had been just moments before. Was it possible? Had they actually changed back? Shane ran over to the mirror near the sink. "I'm me!" he exclaimed.
Hunter looked. "And I'm me!"
"Yes!" the said high-fiving each other and jumping around like fools.
Stephanie looked at them like they had both completely lost it. She never thought she would see the two of them carrying on like that, least of all together. "You changed back?"
"Yes we did!" Hunter grinned broadly as he walked over to his wife and gave her a great big kiss. "You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do that."
Shane suddenly felt like a third wheel. "Well, um, I think I need to make a phone call," he said quickly and left them to be alone together.
`````````````````````````````````````
8 months later The whole McMahon extended family, which now honoraraly seemed to include Maggie and all of DX, was sitting in the McMahon living room looking at Stephanie and Hunter's new born baby. The proud papa was holding his day old son in his arms, beaming with pride.
"He's so beautiful," Maggie said as she held Shane's hand. On her finger shown a shiny diamond engagement ring.
Stephanie smiled as she looked down at her son. "Thank you. I think so too. Hopefully he won't have to grow up with everyone fighting around him." She looked pointedly at Shane and Hunter.
"I don't think that will be a problem," Shane said looking at Hunter. "Me either." He was resolved that his son would grow up surrounded by love, not hate and mistrust.
Stephanie turned back to Maggie and Shane. "So where are you two going on the honeymoon?"
Shane squeezed Maggie's hand excitedly. The wedding was just one week away and he could hardly wait. "Jamaica. Dad gave me a whole month off and told me not to worry about it. He's really been great."
Vince had really changed a lot lately, loosening up his attitude towards Shane and not pushing him so hard. And he wasn't pushing himself so hard either. Maybe the whole grandpa thing had softened him up.
"I guess we all learned something from that little experience," Hunter said.
Stephanie smiled. She sure had. "Yeah be careful what you wish for."

The End
