Battery Huger

The massive concrete Spanish-American War structure known as Battery Huger has dominated the entire central section of Fort Sumter since 1899, when the battery was completed. Like the fort in which it stands, the battery was named for a South Carolina Revolutionary War hero.

Two long-range 12-inch rifles make up the battery's armament, one of which is known as a "disappearing rifle". The "disappearing rifle" was visable over the parapet when it was firing, but the recoil caused it to "disappear" into a recessed area behind the parapet for reloading. Both weapons had a maximum range of 9 and three quarter miles.
