My Musical Years
You all probably know that i LOVE music!! I love everything about it! That was one of the reasons i decided to join band in middle school around 8 yrs ago. Yep.. 8 yrs ago i was in my old band directors office trying out for 6th grade band. I had to pick 3 instruments that i would like to learn how to play. So i chose clarinet, trombone, and saxophone. i remember that day like it was yesterday... i walked in the office with my parents. He had me go up to the piano and sing pitches back to him.. then he pulled me to the side and had me blow on a couple mouth pieces, then he looked in my mouth..lol.. i was thinking "what the heck does he think hes doing?" lol What he was doing was looking at my "bite" if im sutible to play flute or what have you! (thought that was a lil interesting tid bit to share with u all..lol) Anyway, he looked at and said "I think you would make a great Bassoon player!" I looked at him and said "What is a bassoon?" he tried his best to explain to me what it was.."A bassoon is a low reed instrument. It sits on your right leg.. Its quite large." He tried showing me a picture of one, but it was all faded out.. i couldnt make the instrument out. Anyway i agreed and i was officially a member of the 6th grade band. I went straight home and told my sister (who was a former member of the band - played clarinet and bass clarinet).. and my bro (who was also a member of the high school band - played tuba) then i broke out my encyclopedia and looked up "bassoon" I saw the picture and thought "how am i suppose to play that?"
It was huge.. about as high as the man who was playing it in the picture. Anyway i went and bought a reed.. it was $9.95 .. most expensive 2 pieces of bamboo roped together at the end.. It took all my air the first time to blow in it... i was a tad bit nervous.. a couple days later, he gave me the instrument.. i opened it up and there it sat.. in 3 pieces..VERY heavy... i figured out how to put it together.. but couldnt figure out how only 10 of my fingers where gunna fit on about 100 keys..lol.. what an experience.. lol.. well i played bassoon on through 8th grade... i was pretty good at it.. made superiors at "Concert Festival" my 8th grade year.. I decided to sign up for "Marching Band" for my 9th grade year.. then i found out i couldnt march a Bassoon.. they were too fragile.. and the reeds cracked too easily with the moisture in the air.. So i agreed to play Alto Saxophone.. i thought."piece of cake.. ill get lessons.. and all will be well." My brother was a senior when i was a freshmen.. so he brought home an alto sax home for me and a learners book.. and i started on my own.. i went through that whole summer without lessons.. i taught myself how to play saxophone.. Rookie camp arrived and i met the saxophone section leader... i was nothing compared to him.. wow he was great.. he helped me a lil bit.. but i still couldnt play.. then i met Earl "cat" Williams(an 11th grader at the time).. LOL.. that boy was a trip.. he helped me immensely.. pulled me over to the side and literally taught me my music.. he and i became friends immediately.. he and i were the two clowns of the Saxophone section.. the whole section would get so pissed at us... didnt matter tho..anyway.. that year was "Emotions of war" show.. VERY HARD music.. grade 6.. hardest there is.. i dont believe i played a note of that show unless we were standing still..lol.. that was kinda hard year for me.. my brother was a senior.. and i was too busy trying to prove to him that i COULD do it.. i did tho.. i proved to him.. he graduated and i cried.. i was alone.. no brother there to help me..
my sophmore year was the funniest year i have had my whole 4 yrs in marching band.. the show was wonderful.. i worked my butt off and played just about all the music.. it was still difficult.. but i did it.. ear was a senior so he graduated.. and i was alone but again.. cept my LIL bro was a freshman my 11th grade year... he played tuba too.. hehe my chance to be the bad guy..LOL.. naww really.. i was nice to him..LOL.. anyway.. that show my 11th grade year was a joke.. wasnt even worth it.. i was pissed cuz i didnt make staff.. so i didnt put any effort in it...i was lil miss trouble maker..anyway at the end of my 11th grade year i decided i was gunna write the director a staff paper.. i didnt care if i made it or not.. so i wrote it.. told him exactly how i felt about things.. and it wasnt nice..lol.. He pulled me into his office one day and told me that he respected what i did.. i was REALLY shocked..lol.. he questioned a couple things i had said.. and i wrote A SECOND paper clarifying things.. i just knew i wouldnt make it on staff.. it really didnt bother me either.. anyway it was time for the band banquet. that was where he announced the new show for next year and who would be on staff.. so i went. I sat with my friends.. wanting to know what the new show was.. but first he had to announce the new staff.. i knew all my friends we're gunna be on it.. so i showed my support.. and he got to the saxophones. and announced "Kandace Kneece" im serious i came close to passing out..LOL.. i was WAY too excited... i told him how i felt about things he has done.. and the way he does things.. and it paid off.. i was extremely proud of myself... anyway.. i had all kinds of ppl coming up to me and congratulating me.. i felt good.. lol.. my senior year.. hehe.. i was like the most favorite section leader.. ppl wanted to join my section..LOL.. we ha da competition on my birthday.. and i was on the acceptance commitee and while we were on the field waiting for the wards ceremony, bout this time the announcer comes on and has the whole stadium sing happy birthday to me.. THAT ROCKED!!! hehe... it was a fun year...i also made it to symphonic I band.. the hardest.. we made superiors at "concert festival" and we went to the "Grand NAI" where we won 1st in the US... GREAT accomplishment.. and i was part of it.. YAYAYA.. it was my last year.. and the sadest.. i didnt want to leave.. the band was my life.. to this day it was the funniest part of my life... i made all kinds of friends.. I still have them.. thank god..lol.. but i sure do miss it.. im an active "alumni" hehe.. my lil bro is still in band.. tho he doesnt march in band.. hes strictly concert.. i still help out!!??!! Its fun!! ;-)
