Upcoming projects:
April 28/01 - IGN Film Force reports that EN turned down the lead role in the film version of the Marvel comic Daredevil, giving
the reason that he wants to focus more on writing and directing .
Motherless Brooklyn may be moving ahead. Lethem Landscape, a website on MB author Jonathan Lethem, received a tip that Lethem visited the Death to Smoochy set Tues (April 17) afternoon and spoke with EN, Danny De Vito, and Catherine Keener between takes
Only days before, EN was an observer on the Mexico City set (on Sat 4/14) of Frida (a paparazzi pic of him on his way to/from the set made the Mexican papers). He is not scheduled to start filming his cameo appearance as Nelson Rockefeller in Frida until mid-May. A release date of December 2001 is scheduled. Fridamovie.comhas a daily diary of the Frida filming.
According to the April 17th issue of the Toronto Sun, EN still has a few weeks of filming to go on Death to Smoochy in Toronto. The April 17th report posted on Dark Horizons indicates that Smoochy director De Vito hated the ending (which had already been filmed) and had a rewrite done and is also reshooting some other scenes
April 8/01- Filming on Frida began this weekend in Mexico City.
March 19/01- The Score trailer (movie preview) hit theaters this previous weekend. It is showing before Enemy of the Gates and Along Came A Spider
(NOTE: you may not find it in every theater, I don't know if it varies). The current release date for The Score is JULY 13.
March 17/01 - Edward Norton is beginning filming on a new movie called Frida
It's Smoochy Time! Dark Horizons had some interesting news about filming that went on at Times Square (see below). Also, filming on Frida Kahlo is no longer starting in March, but will start about four or five months from now. Go to the Frida Kahlo page for more info.
"Death to Smoochy" is currently filming in Times Square. While there weren't any visible cameras or actors around today (stars are Edward Norton, Robin Williams, Jon Stewart, Katherine Keener, and Danny Devito, who also directs), two things are noticable, in addition to a bunch of production assistant types hanging around in some areas. First, above the WB Studio store, there's a HUGE sign with a picture of Norton in costume as "Smoochy," a large purple rhino. The sign says "It's Smoochy Time!" and next to it, neon of "National Kids Net" lights up. Secondly, ABC's big new Times Square studio is covered with photos for exterior shots--lots more shots of Norton as "Smoochy" plaster the windows, and just inside the door a shot of "Smoochy" and his "Rhinettes" (two short similiarly attired men) is visible. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so I couldn't snap a shot."
January 24, 2001- Changes at New Line, including the departure of production president Michael De Luca, makes the future of Motherless Brooklyn "unclear". It was announced in Oct 1999 that EN would produce and star in the adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel about a detective with Tourette's Syndrome who tries to find his mentor's killer. Click here to read about Motherless Brooklyn. The release date for The Score is also unclear: previews of 2001 movies by Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times indicate that the release date is to be announced.
January 18, 2001- It's official. Filming has begun on Death to Smoochy. Warner Brothers sent out a press release that includes more info on the movie.
January 17, 2001 Filming on Death to Smoochy is supposed to start today (Hollywood Reporter production listings). A RUMOR on Monday's Dark Horizons mentions that it may shoot tonight and tomorrow night at Coney Island at night and later on in the movie, they are apparently going to use locations in New Jersey (Remember, this is only a rumor).
Upcomingmovies.com reports that Olympic silver medalist Elvis Stojko (figure skating) has joined the cast of Smoochy
Death to Smoochy will start filming in February in Toronto.
Yale University's Stage Blue, a benefit that celebrated Yale alumni (including EN) in the entertainment field, was held last
night simultaneously in New York City and Los Angeles. Get the story from the Yale Daily News. This week's US magazine
includes a high school pic of EN playing baseball. Angela Bassett (EN's co-star in The Score) is scheduled for interviews
this week on Later (Wed night/Thurs morning) and Entertainers (check your local listings) Will she talk about The Score? I don't know, but I'm going to give it a look.
NEW EDWARD NORTON PROJECT ANNOUNCED!!- Just in time for Halloween, EN has chosen his next
project. EN will star in the comedy Death to Smoochy opposite Robin Williams and Catherine Keener with Danny DeVito
directing. Williams will play the host of a kiddie show who was fired and replaced by EN's Smoochy (a Barney-like blue
rhino). Smoochy (well, the guy in the suit) also starts dating Williams former lover (Keener) and Williams plots to kill him.
POSSIBLE PROJECT FOR EN?- The French press has reported that EN may portray Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
the famous writer ("The Little Prince") and aviator, in the film Saint-Ex for director Régis Wargnier (East West, Indochine)
based on the book Saint Exupéry: A Biography by Stacy Schiff. There have been a number of possible projects mentioned in the past weeks, hopefully soon we will find out
some more info.
The Actor- Edward Norton talks a little more about possibly doing a film with
writer/director Conor McPherson ("The Weir") in an Irish Times (9/16/00) article. Read the
whole article [Thanks to Joasantiago@aol.com for the info!]
"I'd love to do it, but there's all that usual stuff about getting the studio to do it the right
way...It's tentatively called The Actor and it's a wonderful kind of a farce, almost like
Tootsie, about a young, not very good actor, who works as a dresser for an
older, famous hasbeen actor in his regional company, touring Shakespeare. He's playing
sword-carrier number two roles and trying to decide if he's cut out for a life in the
theatre. It involves him being able to play all these different characters brilliantly in
real life, but he's never able to translate it into his work on the stage."
POSSIBLE EDWARD NORTON PROJECT?- The last few days have seen a lot of
activity- new articles and EN's appearance at the Deauville Film Festival. One of the articles
(GMTV Q & A with Edward Norton ) includes EN mentioning that he is "hoping to do a film
with Irish writer Conor McPherson('The Weir')... It's one of the funniest screenplays I ever read
and I really hope it comes off in the spring." Along with the new articles comes the uncertainty of another Edward Norton project- The Painted Veil. The
Painted Veil was supposed to start filming in the fall (Variety 2/25/00). In the most recent
articles, The Painted Veil is never mentioned. EN instead brings up another upcoming project -
Hart's War (which is supposed to start filming in Prague in January)- and taking time off
beforehand. Unfortunately, my efforts to find out the status of The Painted Veil and his other
upcoming film projects have been unsuccessful.
NEW EDWARD NORTON PROJECT!!!- EN will star in Hart's War, an adaptation of the novel by John Katzenbach ("Just Cause") and it will be directed by Gregory Hoblit, who directed Norton in his film debut Primal Fear. Shooting is scheduled to start in Prague this January. Hart's War is a World War II drama in which Norton will play a POW who ends up defending a prisoner accused of killing another prisoner in the camp, while the other prisoners secretly use this as a diversion to plan their escape.
NEW PROJECT RUMOR: Mr. Showbiz Deadline Hollywood (6/22) report that Edward Norton`s newest possible project is "a rethinking of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah film Straw Dogs", which starred Dustin Hoffman. "Sources" say that EN is "determined to star in and direct" the project and that the script would be written by Keeping the Faith screenwriter Stuart Blumberg. THIS IS JUST A RUMOR FOR NOW!
Edward Norton is currently filming The Score.
The Score: Edward Norton will act next to Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando in The Score. This movie will be directed by Frank Oz. Filming will begin May 15, in Montreal.
