Background: Back in 1992, Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies, and Chris Joannou started a band called Innocent Criminals just to have something fun to do. When a neighbor heard about a local TV show's demo-tape contest in the spring of '94 , she suggested that the band enter a cassette of their music. The boys sent in their song 'Tomorrow' and were picked as the winners out of more than 800 entries. Their prize was the chance to shoot a low-budget music video and to have their song professionally recorded.
Meanwhile, the band decided to change their name: silverchair is a combination of the titles of two of their favorite songs, one by Nirvana and the other by an Australian band You Am I. By September 1994, 'Tomorrow' was a Number 1 hit in Australia and soon thereafter the band had an international record deal.
